Huy: Huysburg Monastery and the Romanesque Road

Huysburg: Tours and monastery history
If you are looking for a hotel in Huy, Huysburg can be a specific point of reference when choosing your destination. Tours led by a monk or a tour guide offer insights primarily into the church and parts of the monastery buildings. This makes it easy to include the visit as a cultural activity in your itinerary while leaving room for other interests.
One clearly datable event in the monastery’s history is the re-establishment of the convent in 1972. It took place at Huysburg with the support of a Polish Benedictine abbey. This made the monastery the only Benedictine monastery in the GDR. The re-establishment and this unique status are related, but they are two distinct aspects of this historical turning point. If you want your trip to include not only buildings but also the history of a monastery, this offers a specific point of reference.
Huysburg Monastery is also a stop on the Romanesque Road. This adds a second cultural perspective to the monastery’s history: Huysburg is a specific place to visit and, at the same time, part of a named route. When choosing a destination, you can therefore distinguish between an interest primarily in the tour and the monastery’s history, and an interest in the monastery’s place on the Romanesque Road.
The wider Harz destination
The wider Harz destination provides a broader regional context. The UNESCO Harz–Brunswick Land–Eastphalia Geopark includes the Harz Mountains. Its visitor infrastructure includes Geopark information centres, adventure trails, show mines, boulder gardens and museums. These offerings provide different ways to explore the region; in Huy, Huysburg offers a distinct focus on tours and monastery history.
Harz National Park has eight visitor centres and national park houses offering information about the park, hiking tips, exhibitions and film screenings. It also offers guided hikes and excursions with rangers, experts, national park guides and national park forest guides. If you have a particular hike or excursion in mind, it is worth checking the latest dates, as programmes may change.
The trails in the Harz can also be considered at different scales. Harz National Park has 560 kilometres of signposted trails leading to particularly scenic viewpoints. The Harzer-Hexen-Stieg trail passes through the national park and the Brocken bog; twelve points of interest highlight special viewpoints, tell stories or invite you to take a short break. The 560 kilometres refer to the park’s signposted trails as a whole, while the points of interest are individual landmarks along the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg. The Brocken Railway offers a way to reach the summit of the Brocken by train. At 1,141 metres, the Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz Mountains and lies in the core zone of Harz National Park.
Another cultural feature of the wider Harz destination is the Upper Harz Water Management System, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since August 2010. It now comprises 107 preserved ponds, 310 kilometres of water ditches and 30 kilometres of underground waterways. These figures refer to different components of the water management system and give an idea of its scale. In this regional overview, other cultural and landscape themes sit alongside the monastery history that shapes a stay in Huy.
