The palace, theater, museums and trails around the town give a stay in Ballenstedt a variety of possible focuses. The ensemble with the Residenzschloss is the town’s landmark and a major attraction for visitors. If you are looking for a hotel in Ballenstedt, the historical sights and surrounding landscape can help you decide what you would like to discover during your trip.

Ballenstedt Palace and its History

The Residenzschloss is a Baroque, three-wing complex that dates largely from the first half of the 18th century. Parts of the former monastery complex, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, were incorporated into its construction. The complex thus brings together evidence from different periods, from the remains of the monastery to the later palace architecture. The former monastery church contains the burial place of Margrave Albrecht the Bear (c. 1100–1170) and his wife Sophie. Ballenstedt Palace is also home to a world-famous stone statue of Uta of Ballenstedt, created by the Naumburg Master.

The palace theater is also part of the town’s cultural character. The early Neoclassical theater building was constructed as a court theater in 1788 and hosts touring performances as well as a range of events. If a particular type of theater performance is important to your trip, check the schedule in advance.

Museums and Exhibitions in the Palace Complex

The Ballenstedt Palace Film Museum is located in the palace’s north wing. Its cinema and film history collection features exhibits from more than 100 years of film history; the museum also has a movie theater with 53 original cinema seats. Another permanent exhibition in the north wing, “The Anhalt Harz Forest Through the Ages,” presents the history of forestry and hunting in the Anhalt Harz Forest.

In the south wing, the exhibition “Courtly Living” explores the living conditions and lifestyle of the Ascanian family shortly before and after 1900. It is presented in seven rooms. Together, the exhibitions offer a variety of points of interest: film history, forestry and hunting, and courtly living are presented side by side, rather than covering the same period or perspective. The “Wilhelm von Kügelgen” Town Museum, located in the palace complex, hosts special exhibitions, lectures, readings and concerts. If you would like to include a particular event in your plans, check the schedule in advance.

Palace Park and Hiking Trails

On the western edge of town lies the 29-hectare Ballenstedt Palace Park, a landscaped park with a valuable collection of mature trees. This work of garden art from the 18th and 19th centuries is part of the “Garden Dreams – Historical Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network and offers visitors peace and relaxation. The park thus offers a different focus from the palace rooms and exhibitions, with garden design and mature trees taking center stage.

For hikes around Ballenstedt, the RW1 circular trail provides a route to follow. It runs around the town in 14 stages; information boards accompany it at 14 notable points in and around the town. At the “Ballenstedt View” lookout on the RW1, the trail crosses an old industrial spoil heap and offers a view of the town. Ballenstedt lies in the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park, which is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark; the nearby forests are suitable for hiking.

More Places to Visit Nearby

Another hiking option, the Teufelsmauer Trail, runs for more than 35 kilometers through forests, flowering cultural landscapes and nature reserves. It connects Ballenstedt with Quedlinburg, Thale and Blankenburg. Falkenstein Castle, above the Selke and in the middle of a nature reserve, is a rewarding hiking destination nearby. An exhibition at the castle explores the origins and influence of the Sachsenspiegel, probably the most important German-language law book of the Middle Ages.

Another point of historical interest is the Jewish Cemetery on Hoymer StraĂźe in Ballenstedt. It is a culturally and historically significant memorial to the Jewish culture of everyday life that was destroyed by the Nazis during the Third Reich. The range of travel interests thus extends from palace architecture, theater and exhibitions to garden art, hiking trails and places of remembrance.
