Ilsenburg (Harz): Art Casting, Town History and Nature
Accommodation in Ilsenburg
Ilsenburg (Harz) combines local history with paths through the Ilse Valley and other nature-related themes. When planning your stay, you can choose between exploring the local history of iron and art casting, taking a guided town tour and going on various hikes. The options also differ in whether you want to focus on a particular historical topic or spend longer outdoors.
Art Casting and Town History
Located in central Ilsenburg, the Art Casting Museum uses an interactive exhibition to showcase the historical development of Ilsenburg’s smelting industry, particularly its art foundry. The exhibition covers iron art casting from its beginnings in the 16th century, when it was used for stove plates, through to art casting in the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is housed in the former manor of the count’s estate, later the estate farm. This means the history of the craft and the historical context of the building are two distinct aspects of a museum visit.
The Ilsenburg Iron Trail explores the town’s history as an educational trail. Its timeline spans iron production and processing from the early Middle Ages to the present day; its theme is “from ore to metal.” Unlike the exhibition at the Art Casting Museum, the trail focuses on the development of iron production and processing in Ilsenburg, while the museum deals particularly with art casting.
Hiking Trails in the Ilse Valley
The Ilse Valley lies southwest of Ilsenburg. A particularly scenic and varied hiking trail follows the Ilse River and bears the name of Heinrich Heine. The cascading Ilse Falls are among its special attractions. The Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail leads through the Ilse Valley from Ilsenburg to the Brocken, taking you along idyllic paths through all the habitats of Harz National Park.
A child-friendly hike to the Ilsestein starts at Blochhauer. It follows the Ilse River, crosses a bridge and then continues along a nature trail to the Ilsestein. This rock formation rises 160 metres above the valley, high above the rooftops of Ilsenburg. The two hiking options have clearly distinct stated destinations: the Heinrich Heine Hiking Trail leads to the Brocken, while the child-friendly hike goes to the Ilsestein.
Town Tours and Nature Exhibition
The virtual town tour follows an approximately three-kilometre QR-code route through the town’s history and takes about an hour. A two-hour guided tour covers the history of Ilsenburg and its monastery, and goes through the town centre to explore the history and culture of Ilsenburg Abbey Church. This gives you two different time frames to choose from: about an hour for the virtual route or two hours for the guided tour. Check the latest route and booking details in advance.
The Ilsetal National Park Visitor Centre lies on the southern edge of Ilsenburg. Its exhibition is devoted to life in the beech forest; there is also something to discover in the centre’s garden. The centre thus complements the town-history themes with an insight into the forest. You can take the exhibition and garden into account when exploring local nature-related attractions.
Getting Around in Season and in the Harz
From May to October, HVB bus route 274, the Ilsetaler, connects Ilsenburg with numerous hiking destinations in Harz National Park. If you plan to use the bus route, check the current timetable before travelling. Its seasonal operating period is important: the stated connection runs from May to October.
The wider Harz travel destination offers a broader setting for nature and hiking, with Harz National Park. It covers 24,732 hectares, accounting for around ten percent of the entire Harz region. The national park has eight visitor centres and national park houses offering information about the park, hiking tips, exhibitions and film screenings. In addition, 560 kilometres of signposted trails lead to particularly scenic viewpoints. At 1,141 metres, the Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz and lies in the national park’s core zone. The Brocken Railway is one way to reach it by train.
