Industrial heritage and town history

The Kunstgussmuseum Ilsenburg (art casting museum) focuses on the history of the Ilsenburg ironworks, especially its art foundry. The interactive exhibition explores iron art casting from its beginnings in the 16th century, with stove plates, through to art casting in the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is housed in the former manor of the count's estate, which later became a state domain. The exhibition theme and the historic setting therefore come together: the foundry's development is part of the museum's content, while the former manor shapes the museum's location.

The Ilsenburger Eisenpfad (Ilsenburg Iron Trail) offers a different perspective. This educational trail takes you through the town's history, from iron production and processing in the Early Middle Ages to the present day. Its theme is “from ore to metal.” While the museum focuses on the ironworks, particularly the art foundry, the Iron Trail places ironworking within a broader historical context.

There are two different ways to explore the town's and monastery's history. A two-hour guided tour covers the history of the town and monastery, and takes you through the town center to explore the history and culture of Ilsenburg Monastery Church. The virtual town tour follows an approximately 3 km QR code route through the town's history and takes about an hour. The time required therefore differs considerably: about an hour for the virtual route and two hours for the guided tour. Hiking and nature

The Heinrich Heine Trail runs through the Ilse Valley from Ilsenburg to the Brocken. Its scenic paths allow you to walk through all the habitats of Harz National Park. The Ilsetal National Park Visitor Center, on the southern outskirts of Ilsenburg, offers a different focus: its exhibition explores life in the beech forest, and the center's garden also offers things to discover.

High above the rooftops of Ilsenburg, the Ilsestein rises 160 meters above the valley. This child-friendly hike starts at Blochhauer, follows the Ilse, crosses a bridge, and then takes a nature trail to the Ilsestein. The route description thus connects the course of the trail with the rock named as its destination.

From May to October, HVB bus route 274 (“Ilsetaler”) connects Ilsenburg with numerous hiking destinations in Harz National Park. If you plan to use this seasonal service, check the current timetable before travelling.
