Illingen brings together pilgrimage traditions, traces of history and hiking trails with different points of focus. When planning your stay, these themes can help you decide what you would like to discover in more detail.

Circular Trails: Mining History and the Ill Valley Heights

Two circular trails each have their own focus. The “After the Shift” themed trail uses information boards and activity stations to convey the historical daily life of a Saarland mining family. The 8.7-kilometer route starts and ends at the hiking information board at the Welschbach sports ground. It is considered suitable for hiking from April to November with sturdy footwear; check seasonal accessibility before setting out. The 8.4-kilometer circular hike in the Ill Valley Heights passes orchards, fields, open deciduous and mixed forests, the Schaumberg Viewpoint, a Kneipp-style area for walking through water, and the Bamster Forest nature trail with more than 30 interactive stations. The distances are similar, but the themes differ more clearly: one focuses on the historical daily life of a mining family, while the other takes in a succession of landscapes, a viewpoint and interactive stations. Trail conditions may change; check them before your hike.

Pilgrimage Traditions and Traces of History

Between Illingen and Steinertshaus stands the neo-Gothic Mountain Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. Its pilgrimage tradition dates back to the 18th century. A historic site in Illingen was first mentioned in documents in 1359. Visitors can see the enclosed courtyard, surviving sections of wall, tower remains and lime trees. The Lehoczky wall ceramics offer another cultural stop: they are open to the public on the ground floor of the former Hohlweck Brewery in Illingen, near their original location. As access arrangements may change, check before visiting.

Getting There by Train and Car

Illingen station is a transfer point between bus and train; regional rail services connect to the ICE stations in Saarbrücken and Homburg. The municipality lies at the junction of the A1 and A8, near the Illingen and Kreuz Saarbrücken exits. If you plan your journey around one of these connections, check the timetable and route in advance, as services and schedules may change.

More Culture in the Wider Neunkirchen Destination

In the wider Neunkirchen destination, Ottweiler stands out for its museums and historic townscape. The Bakery Museum in Ottweiler presents more than 30 machines and around 1,000 exhibits from different periods of traditional baking across two floors. The Saarland School Museum brings school life in past centuries to life with faithfully furnished classrooms. These include a classroom from 1910 to 1950 and a 19th-century teaching room. Ottweiler’s old town also has a medieval character and features impressive Renaissance and Baroque buildings.

In Schiffweiler, three mining trails explore the municipality’s industrial heritage and show how mining affected people and landscapes. A technical tour along the Neunkirchen Ironworks Trail demonstrates the work processes at the Neunkirchen ironworks and includes climbing a blast furnace more than 23 meters high. As tour arrangements may change, check the conditions for the tour in advance.
