Neunkirchen: Industrial Heritage, Museums and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Neunkirchen
The Neunkirchen Ironworks Trail is a roughly two-kilometre circular route through the historic Old Ironworks Site, passing blast furnaces and hot-blast stoves. The technical tour shows visitors how work was carried out at the Neunkirchen ironworks; it also includes climbing a blast furnace more than 23 metres high. As visitor regulations may change, please check the latest conditions before your visit.
Industrial and Geological History
The three Schiffweiler mining trails explore the municipality’s industrial heritage and show the impact of mining on people and landscapes. GONDWANA – The Praehistorium in Schiffweiler offers a different perspective: using modern animation and audiovisual technology, it presents the history of the planet and life. While the mining trails focus on the history of a municipality and its landscape, GONDWANA explores a broader subject in terms of time and space.
Ottweiler: Townscape and Everyday Life
Ottweiler’s Old Town has a medieval character and features impressive buildings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Two museums explore other aspects of history. The Bakery Museum showcases more than 30 machines and around 1,000 exhibits from different periods of the traditional baking trade, spread across two floors. The Saarland School Museum evokes school life in centuries past with faithfully furnished classrooms. These include a classroom dating from 1910 to 1950 and a 19th-century teaching room. The museums focus on different themes: traditional crafts at one, historic learning spaces at the other.
Landscape and Trails
Steinbach lies in the Ostertal valley, on the edge of Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park in the district of Neunkirchen. Numerous hiking trails through the surrounding countryside lead to Steinbach. The BetzelhĂĽbel panoramic tower, built in 2013, offers views across large parts of Saarland, neighbouring Rhineland-Palatinate and the historic Old Town of Ottweiler.
At the Erlebnisort Reden, the 90-metre-high spoil heap offers views across the region and invites visitors to go hiking. A four-kilometre leisure and skating trail runs around it. Saarengeti offers a circular route of around five kilometres, as well as varied hiking and cycling trails. The routes differ: at Reden, the leisure trail loops around the spoil heap; at Saarengeti, additional hiking and cycling trails complement the circular route.
Gardens and Traditions
The Finkenrech Leisure Centre features themed gardens for relaxing walks and other outdoor activities. Group activities for children and adults can be booked individually and combine learning, fun and nature. The events programme includes music picnics, the “Spring and Autumn at Finkenrech” festivals and workshops. If you plan to attend one of these events, check the dates in advance.
You can also try a traditional activity: at the Steinbach Local History Museum, visitors can make butter using traditional methods. An appointment is required.
When choosing where to stay, the experiences that matter most to you can help determine the location: would you like to focus on the historic buildings and museums in Ottweiler, or are you more interested in the ironworks site, mining history and hiking trails? Use these priorities to guide your search for a hotel in Neunkirchen as you plan your trip.
