Eppelborn: Gardens, Trails and Industrial Heritage
Accommodation in Eppelborn
Eppelborn offers a variety of reasons to stay: you can explore gardens and hiking trails, discover traces of industrial history, or visit a historic site. For planning purposes, it is worth considering the different routes and themes separately. For example, a garden visit can be planned differently from a hike that calls for a day or two.
Historic Trails and Sites
The Wiesbach Miners’ Path is a preserved footpath and cart track from the industrial era that led to the Göttelborn mine. It has been preserved in its original condition and was recognized as an archaeological monument in 2022. If you visit the path, park at Outreau-Platz in Wiesbach and walk from there to the path; there is no parking directly beside it.
Another historical site awaits you in Bubach-Calmesweiler: Buseck Castle is a Baroque manor house built in 1735. It is considered an important testament to the history of the former lordship of Eppelborn. Together, a surviving trail from the industrial era and a Baroque building represent different chapters in local history.
Gardens and Scenery at Finkenrech
Finkenrech is an environmental and leisure center at the southern gateway to Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The rose garden covers approximately 1,500 square meters and is home to around 3,700 roses. Curving paths, arranged gravel areas, water features and ponds define the look of the Asian garden. The different garden areas offer a variety of impressions, from the rose collection to a design featuring water and gravel.
Fragrance, medicinal and herb gardens illustrate the importance of plants as seasonings and remedies. Other garden areas offer ideas for designing and caring for ornamental and kitchen gardens at home. Finkenrech combines these garden themes with varied, well-signposted paths. If you are particularly interested in garden design, you can plan your visit with this in mind.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Route
Nordic.Fitness.Park Finkenrech is the first licensed Nordic fitness park in Saarland. Three routes lead through the forests of Finkenrech and run alongside the Klingelfloß stream. Check local route information before setting out, as trail conditions may change.
A signposted hiking trail of approximately five kilometers connects Eppelborn train station with Finkenrech. Small signs and arrow markers showing distances indicate the route in both directions; check the route on site before your hike. At approximately 23.9 kilometers, the Panorama Trail is considerably longer and is listed as taking either one or two days. The hiking options therefore differ primarily in distance and the amount of time required.
The Eppelborn cycling loop is another option for a bike ride. It is approximately 32.2 kilometers long and runs mostly on paved paths, with some sections on field and forest tracks. Take these different path types into account when planning. The information about the cycling loop describes a different activity from the hiking trails, so it should not be read as an alternative hiking route.
More Things to Do
Hellbergbad offers an infrared heat cabin, a steam bath, a sunbathing lawn, a children's splash pool with a slide, and an outdoor Kneipp pool. Activities include water aerobics, aqua jogging classes, and Hydro Power. Operating conditions and class times may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
The official geometric center of Saarland is located in Habach. An information board stands 55 meters north of the exact point. You can treat the center as a destination in its own right in Habach and use the board as a landmark.
In the Wider Neunkirchen Destination
The wider Neunkirchen destination also offers its own cultural attractions. In Ottweiler, the Bakery Museum displays more than 30 machines and around 1,000 exhibits from various periods in the traditional baking trade, spread across two floors. The Saarland School Museum in Ottweiler evokes school life in past centuries with faithfully recreated classrooms, including a schoolroom from 1910 to 1950 and a 19th-century teacher's room.
