Holzerath is located in the Osburger Hochwald and in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The forest, Holzerath Lake, trails and recreational spots offer different points of interest to help you plan your trip. Dated records of local history add another dimension. You can therefore consider nature, outdoor activities and historical sites as separate areas of focus.

Forest, Landscape and Trails

Holzerath’s forest covers 486 hectares and includes conifers, deciduous trees and coppice woodland. A large part of the forest was designated Core Zone III of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park in 1980. These details describe different aspects: the area quantifies the extent of the forest, while the designation provides a historical classification as Core Zone III.

Stage 26 of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig passes directly by Holzerath. If you are planning a hike on this trail, check the current route beforehand. Above the village, a hiking hut offers a place to rest with views across the region. We recommend checking its condition before your visit.

Another nature highlight is the Enterbachtal Nature Reserve, where wild daffodils and orchids can be found. The information about forests and protected areas provides different points of reference: the forest area and its tree stands on the one hand, and the plant species mentioned in the Enterbachtal on the other.

Holzerath Lake and Recreation in the Village

The recreational complex at Holzerath Lake is located in the Holzerath Forest and is about a 15-minute walk from Holzerath. The complex includes a water-treading pool and a children’s swing. The barbecue hut is also suitable for an outing. The different facilities can be distinguished when planning: water, a play feature and a place for an outing each offer a different way to enjoy the lake.

Holzerath Lake is considered suitable for swimming. Check the current bathing conditions and water quality before swimming. The condition of the recreational complex should also be checked locally before your visit.

On Sundays and public holidays, four local clubs take turns providing refreshments at Holzerath Lake. They serve Schwenkbraten, grilled sausages and drinks. As the schedule may vary by season or date, check whether refreshments will be available on the day of your visit.

The village has a well-maintained public beach volleyball court below the community center on Schulstraße. Benches and a pavilion are located in the public village square, which also has space for boules. The locations therefore serve different purposes: sitting and playing boules are the main features of the village square, while the beach volleyball court offers another specific way to play. Public recreational facilities can change, so check their current condition if needed.

History at Specific Sites

Holzerath was first mentioned in 1265. At the border with Bonerath, a wayside cross erected in 1871 stands next to a soldier’s grave from 1945. The dates mark different historical reference points: the first mention of the village, and a cross and a grave with their respective dates. Together, these provide specific, clearly dated points of reference for local history.

The Wider Trier-Saarburg Destination

Across the wider Trier-Saarburg destination, the district has 492 kilometers of cycling routes. One individual ride is the Tälchen Tour: it is designated a moderately difficult circular route, is 37.28 kilometers long and is listed as taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The start and finish are in Konz. These figures describe two different scales: the total length of cycling routes in the district, and the length and approximate duration of one individual circular route.
