Merzalben: Gräfenstein Castle, Hiking Trails and Cycling Tours
Accommodation in Merzalben
Merzalben lies in the heart of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. Hiking and cycling trails, the long-distance Palatinate Forest Trail and Gräfenstein Castle give the town a variety of points of interest. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Merzalben, you can start by choosing based on whether you’re mainly interested in hiking, cycling or visiting the castle. The trails and sights offer concrete points of reference.
Gräfenstein Castle and its views
Gräfenstein Castle, also known as “Merzalber Schloss,” is a castle ruin dating from the Staufer period, about two kilometres east of Merzalben. Its seven-sided keep is unique in Germany. The walls, towers and inner courtyard are also well preserved. A striking red sandstone wall supports the ruin, making the stone at the castle a visible part of the structure.
The castle offers sweeping views across the Palatinate Forest. Access is free all year round. A steep path from the Schäferei hiking car park leads up to the castle in about ten minutes. Guided tours are offered at the castle.
Hiking the Palatinate Forest Trail
The Palatinate Forest Trail runs through Merzalben. From the town centre, the long-distance trail reaches Gräfenstein Castle after a short climb. The route doesn’t end at the castle: from there, the Palatinate Forest Trail continues to Winschertkopf, a red sandstone rock above the Merzalben valley. The route described thus connects the town centre with the castle ruin and a distinctive rock formation in the landscape.
The Winschertfels viewpoint is on the 521-metre-high Vorderer Winschertkopf. From there, the view extends across Merzalben, Gräfenstein Castle and the forests of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The viewpoint can be reached via the Palatinate Forest Trail and is free to access all year round. Free parking is available at the Schäferei hiking car park. Hiking and cycling trails maintained by the Palatinate Forest Association also run through Merzalben.
Cycling tours and choosing a route
Merzalben lies directly on Tour 1 of the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park. This route is notable for its high proportion of singletrack. Another option is the Gräfensteiner Land cycling tour, which is about 46 kilometres long and runs to Merzalben, where you can visit Gräfenstein Castle. The two route descriptions focus on different aspects: Tour 1 stands out for its singletrack, while the Gräfensteiner Land cycling tour is notable for its approximate total length. Check the route details and conditions before setting off.
Town centre and nature
Merzalben’s historic town centre is also part of its character. The old parish church of St. Peter and Paul stands alongside the newer parish church of the Holy Cross. The two churches offer a different point of interest from the town’s hiking and cycling: here, the focus is on the town’s history; elsewhere, it’s on trails through the landscape and to nearby sights.
Those interested in wildlife may encounter animals in the area, including hares, roe deer, wild boar, red deer and foxes. Sightings aren’t guaranteed; these are among the species you may see there. Together, the biosphere reserve, the sandstone of the castle and the trails through Merzalben make this a destination whose highlights can be explored according to your own interests.
