The Protestant church, the reconstructed model of the early Wiligartawisa manor farm and Falkenburg Castle shape the local historical landscape; nature and culture in the Südwestpfalz region provide a distinct, broader thematic framework.

Church and local history

The Protestant church in Wilgartswiesen has been a listed monument since 1985. It was built between 1839 and 1843, with a striking neo-Romanesque twin-tower façade. Inside are a large rose window and an Oberlinger organ with 16 stops. The building offers a chance to see both the design of its façade and distinctive features of the church interior.

Manor farm model and Falkenburg Castle

Below Falkenburg Castle stands a reconstructed miniature of the early Wiligartawisa manor farm. It is intended to give visitors an impression of life more than 1,000 years ago. Falkenburg Castle stands on a prominent rocky ridge on the edge of Wilgartswiesen, near Hauenstein. French troops destroyed it in 1683. The two subjects highlight different periods: the model looks back to a way of life in the distant past, while the castle’s history includes a specific, dated turning point.

Nature and trails in the Südwestpfalz region

The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape of the wider Südwestpfalz travel region. Well-maintained, clearly marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past striking Buntsandstein sandstone cliffs. One example is the premium Altschlossfelsen hiking trail, which leads to the rock formation of the same name, around 1.5 kilometres long. The Teufelstisch (Devil’s Table) near Hinterweidenthal is 14 metres high and a popular destination for day trips. The Südwestpfalz region thus offers both a broad landscape and named natural attractions. The figures refer to different dimensions: 14 metres is the height of the Teufelstisch, while around 1.5 kilometres is the length of the Altschlossfelsen formation; they are therefore not directly comparable.

Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today. Alt-Dahn is one of the three Dahn castles, which are popular destinations for day trips.
