If you want to plan your stay around wine country, walking trails, or local history, Heuchelheim-Klingen offers several ways to do so. The landscape includes rows of vines, pastures along the streams, poplars and alders, small apple orchards, and grazing animals; the Palatinate Forest can be seen on the horizon.

Between Vineyards and Streams

Shady paths run alongside one of the two local streams. There are also hiking trails and a combined wine and stream nature trail. Guided walks lead through gently rolling vineyards, combining panoramic views with insights into viticulture, the landscape, and local history. The trails therefore differ in focus: the stream paths highlight shade and water, while the vineyard walks focus on viticulture and views.

Klingen also has a small, shady playground. If you plan to visit, check the current situation locally in advance.

Churches and Local History

Visitor attractions in Heuchelheim include a Renaissance town hall with arcades and the Protestant Church of St. Oswald. In Klingen, the Protestant Church of St. George is another place to visit. Its present form dates to around 1500 and is Late Gothic in style. The organ in St. George is considered the oldest playable organ in the Palatinate; however, experts disagree about its exact age.

In summer, St. George’s Church is generally open all day on Sundays. A key for visits is available from the Scheib family. As the seasonal arrangement may change, it is best to check locally in advance before visiting.

Wine and Festivals

Events also celebrate the area’s connection to wine. The Weinpanorama includes a wine tasting and delicacies in the Herrenpfad vineyard area. Check the current program for your travel dates. At the Herbschdwächelfeschd, guests enjoy Rebknorzespieß and hearty dishes with new wine served in vintners’ wagons. Dates and programs may vary from year to year; check the latest plans before your trip.

More Things to Discover in the Southern Wine Route

The wider Southern Wine Route destination offers more nature and cultural attractions. The Southern Wine Route borders the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve and Nature Park. Landeck Castle has a 25-meter-high platform. When visibility is good, views from there extend across the Vorderpfalz toward the Odenwald and Black Forest. Replicas of the Imperial Regalia are on display in Trifels Imperial Castle.

The Southern Wine Route’s trails also vary in length and theme. The TrifelsErlebnisWeg is an easy 3.6-kilometer route with 18 play and learning stations. At 6.1 kilometers, the Keschde-Erlebnisweg is longer and is laid out as a stroller-friendly circular route around Föhrlenberg; its theme is the Palatinate sweet chestnut. At Silzer See, the climate and nature trail comprises two circular routes of different lengths focusing on forests, biodiversity, drinking water production, and water retention.

For cycling tours in the region, the “Cycling in the Southern Palatinate” map covers 27 signposted cycle paths and circular routes from the Rhine, across the Southern Wine Route, to the Palatinate Forest. As map editions and signage may be updated, check the latest edition before setting out.
