Silz by Silzer See: Nature, Trails and Wildlife Park
Accommodation in Silz
Silz is shaped by Silzer See, the wildlife and hiking park, and its hiking and cycling outings. The village lies in the Klingbachtal valley by Silzer See, within the landscape of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. During your stay, you can choose from lakeside activities, wildlife watching, nature education and destinations along the hiking trails.
Silzer See and Klingbachtal
At Silzer See, paths and lakeside areas offer opportunities for walks and relaxation. The lake is therefore not only a landmark in the Klingbachtal valley, but also a destination in its own right for spending time outdoors. If you want to plan your time, you can distinguish between walks and breaks by the lake, circular trails in the wildlife park and destinations along the nature park trails.
Wildlife watching and nature education
The Southern Wine Route Wildlife and Hiking Park covers 100 hectares. There, you can observe more than 400 animals from 15 European species. The park has short and long circular trails, a petting area and an adventure playground. The different facilities each offer a distinct focus: the circular trails are about exploring the park, while the petting area and playground provide other options for your visit.
Another nature-focused attraction is the Silz Seerunde Climate and Nature Discovery Trail. It includes a tree trail, a water discovery station and a fish quiz. There is also an Actionbound game and information in plain language via the SÜW Erlebnis App. Alongside wildlife watching, the focus is therefore on topics relating to trees, water and fish. Digital content may change; if you plan to use the game or app information, check in advance what is currently available.
Hiking destinations and excursions
Two nature park trails lead to different destinations. Nature Park Trail 25 reaches the shelter at Abtskopf and the Wasgaublick viewpoint. Nature Park Trail 26 leads to the panoramic viewpoint at Schweinsfelsen and includes a steep, secured ladder. When choosing a route, take into account both the destination and the ladder section on Trail 26. Trail conditions and safety measures may change; check the latest information before setting off.
Silz is also a starting point for hiking and cycling excursions in the Trifelsland region and the Palatinate Forest. Hiking routes head towards Lindelbrunn, Berwartstein, Landeck and Madenburg. The Klingbach cycling route offers a different option for a bike tour, leading towards the Rhine. These options therefore differ in mode of travel and direction, and you do not need to combine them into a single tour.
Getting here and finding your way
The public hiking car park by the sports ground is accessible at all times and can be reached by car or bus route 531. If travelling by bus, check the timetable before departure. Silz also has a motorhome parking area; check its availability locally before your trip. This lets you plan your journey and your stay in the village separately, without overlooking the bus timetable or the parking question.
Local landmarks and tradition
Silz's main street is associated with a memorial to Pastor L. Karbeck, a crucifix and a stone cross dated 1823. West of Silz is a heritage zone containing a remnant of the Westwall, which consists of an anti-tank barrier line several hundred metres long. These two local landmarks have different focuses: the main street features memorials and religious markers, while west of the village there is a longer structural installation.
The traditional nickname “Schnecken” (“snails”) is associated with a damp meadow valley crossed by three watercourses. Schneckekerwe is also associated with this nickname and is a local event. If you would like to visit Silz for the occasion, check the event dates before your trip.
