Steinfeld: Cactus Garden, Trails and Blueberry Festival
Accommodation in Steinfeld
Discover Steinfeld as a destination
The cactus garden, hiking and cycling trails, historical information along the Westwall Circular Trail and the annual Blueberry Festival give Steinfeld its distinctive character. If you are looking for a hotel, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. Local attractions range from a guided tour of a plant collection to trails with historical stops and cycling opportunities.
Cactus garden on the edge of the forest
Kakteenland Steinfeld is just outside the town, on the edge of the forest. It is home to more than 1,000 cactus species and 600 other succulents; the collection’s numbers may change over time. Admission is free, and access is barrier-free. Check access conditions before your arrival. Guided tours about cacti, succulents and aloes are available for groups of 5 to 35 people. They last about 60 minutes. If you are planning a guided tour, check booking requirements and availability in advance.
Hiking trails and historical stops
The Steinfeld Westwall Circular Trail passes through scenic parts of the municipality. At 22 locations, 24 information panels explain the Westwall as well as other historical events and periods. The circular trail therefore combines an insight into history with a route through the municipality. The Verbandsgemeinde hiking trail also passes through Steinfeld.
Another option is the BienwaldmĂĽhle Circular Trail. Steinfeld railway station is a possible starting point; along the way, the route passes Kakteenland and the swimming pool before continuing through Steinfeld. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Information about the starting point and route helps distinguish this loop from the other hiking trails.
Cycling routes and other attractions
The 139-kilometre Kraut und RĂĽbenweg long-distance route passes through Steinfeld. The 57-kilometre German-French Pamina Lautertal Cycle Route also runs nearby; 18 kilometres of it are in France. The distances and the section in France give you specific points of reference for comparing these two cycling routes. You can check timetables, routes and conditions before your ride.
The surrounding area also offers other ways to enjoy nature and stay active. The nearby Bienwald is characterised by mixed forest and flat trails. You can choose a route based on the features described and your interest in hiking, cycling or visiting the cactus garden.
Church, swimming pool and Blueberry Festival
St. Leodegar is the patron saint of Steinfeld’s church; its name is thought to date back to the 7th or 8th century. The current swimming pool complex opened in May 1982.
The traditional Blueberry Festival is part of the town’s annual calendar. It is held every year on the first weekend in July and includes the crowning of a Blueberry Queen. Check the dates and programme for the relevant year if the festival is important to your travel plans.
Getting here and finding your way around
Steinfeld railway station is on the Weißenburg–Winden railway line. Check connections and timetables before travelling. The location of the nearest stops to Kakteenland is a separate consideration: the closest train and bus stops are about 1.5 kilometres away. Check their locations and current connections in advance. Together with the option of starting the Bienwaldmühle Circular Trail at the railway station, this information helps you plan your journey and routes separately.
