Bobenheim-Roxheim: Nature, the Way of St. James and local history
Accommodation in Bobenheim-Roxheim
Bobenheim-Roxheim can be explored through several specific themes: the Roxheim Old Rhine, the birdlife of the local bird park, churches and the Palatinate Way of St. James.
Nature, wildlife and water
The Roxheim Old Rhine is a historic former river course. Five nature reserves lie in the eastern part of Bobenheim-Roxheim, within the Palatinate Rhine floodplains landscape protection area. Wetlands, reed beds and riparian woodland characterize this landscape and support a diverse range of flora and fauna.
More than twelve bird species live in the Bobenheim-Roxheim bird park. They include flamingos, birds of prey, cranes, turacos and parrots. These species give an impression of the range of birds kept there.
Swimming is permitted at Silbersee within the bathing areas marked by buoys. Canoeing, sailing, rowing and windsurfing are prohibited from November 1 to March 15. Before your visit, check whether any subsequent local changes to the regulations apply.
The Way of St. James and other routes
The Palatinate Way of St. James begins in the northern part of the municipal area and leads from Bobenheim-Roxheim toward Speyer. Beyond Speyer, the route continues through the Palatinate Forest toward Hornbach. This makes it possible to distinguish clearly between the route’s starting point within the municipal area and its continuation beyond Speyer.
The Bobenheim-Roxheim Way of St. James local loop, inaugurated in 2005, is a separate route. Stops include visits to St. Maria Magdalena Roxheim, the Roxheim-Bobenheim Protestant church and the Jewish cemetery. A cycling tour led by Klaus Graber focuses on the municipality’s history along the loop. The tour meets at the Im Busch open-air stage; by car, it can be reached via the Rheinufer 1 exit from the B9. Participation is free of charge. If you would like to take part, check in advance when the tour takes place.
The Olympic Day Run route also has a specific historical date: it opened on June 25, 2005. If you plan to use it today, check the route’s current condition beforehand.
Churches and local history
St. Maria Magdalena Roxheim was built in 1833/34 in the Neoclassical style. Another specific feature of the church is its organ, which has 37 stops. The construction period and the organ offer two different points of reference for exploring local church history.
Traditional crafts in the area included basket weaving and the making of reed mats. Willow and reeds from the wetlands were used for this work. These crafts thus connect materials from the landscape with the history of local work.
In the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis, the local history museum of the Bobenheim-Roxheim Society for Nature Conservation and Local History is housed in the former Roxheim town hall. It has the largest collection on the natural environment of the Palatinate Rhine floodplains.
The landscape and cycling routes of the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis also provide a regional setting: wooded Rhine floodplains, fields, and vegetable and wine cultivation come together there. Numerous cycling routes run through fields and floodplains. The Kraut und Rüben Cycle Route passes through green fields and villages and along the Rhine.
