Altrip is shaped by its water and nature as well as its local history. Three old Rhine arms, the nearby Blaue Adria and the tower of the Protestant church offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Altrip, you can consider whether nature, swimming or historical landmarks matter most for your stay.

Water, Nature and Swimming

Three old Rhine arms in Altrip border nature reserves. Near the town is the Blaue Adria recreational area, with around 100,000 square metres of beach; visitors can swim there. Another natural attraction is the Neuhofener Altrhein: this isolated inland body of water is a place where around 200 bird species have been counted.

The Altrip ferry is used by cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians and families travelling to recreational areas around Altrip. The crossing takes less than ten minutes, though the duration can vary depending on conditions. Check the current sailing times when planning your trip. This allows you to include the ferry crossing as a separate part of your day’s plans, without tying it to a specific route or set schedule.

Church Tower and Local History

The tower of the Protestant church dates from the early 13th century. It is considered the only fully preserved Romanesque tower in its district. Historically, the tower served as a landmark and distance marker for Rhine boatmen—a former function that helps explain its importance to shipping on the Rhine.

Another piece of local history was added in 2019: a 2.20-metre-high Valentinian stele was unveiled in Altrip during celebrations marking the town’s 1,650th anniversary. The church tower and the stele represent different historical points of reference: the tower is a surviving structure from the early 13th century, while the stele was unveiled as part of the 2019 celebrations.

Cycling and the Regional Setting

The wider destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis offers good conditions for cycling: the district has few significant climbs and its own network of routes. This extensive network includes the Kraut-und-Rüben cycle route. In Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis, the route passes through green fields and villages and runs alongside the Rhine. The district is also centrally located between the Palatinate Forest and the Odenwald. Seasonal produce from Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis is served in the region’s inns and restaurants.

Cultural Attractions in Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis

Cultural attractions are also spread across several places in Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis. In Schifferstadt, the Day of the Golden Hat has been celebrated annually since 2018. In Böhl-Iggelheim, museums feature an exhibition about the Bechtold family dye works, which operated a black, blue and fine-dyeing business in Iggelheim in the 19th century. Blue dyeing is recognised as intangible cultural heritage.

In Bobenheim-Roxheim, the local history museum of the Association for Nature Conservation and Local Heritage is housed in the former town hall. It has the largest collection on the nature of the Rhine floodplains in the Palatinate. These examples complement Altrip’s own attractions with further cultural and landscape connections across Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis, without implying that they are sights in Altrip.
