Heßheim brings together historic village layout, art history and a recurring annual event. If you are looking for a hotel in Heßheim, these highlights can help you narrow down the occasion and time of your trip. The village’s history can be explored through its former village layout and named buildings; the Kerwe is a separate event, and its programme should be checked for the year in question.

Historic Centre and Architectural History

The historic centre follows the former one-street village layout along Hauptstraße and Kirchenstraße. The street plan and buildings together form a key part of the village’s history. Buildings whose surviving fabric dates in part from the 12th or 16th century include the Catholic parish church, the Catholic rectory, the town hall and the Leininger Herrenhof at Hauptstraße 53. These dates refer to parts of the buildings’ surviving fabric and do not mean that each building dates entirely from a single century. The historic focus therefore ranges from the layout of the street to individual buildings with parts of different ages.

Art and Cultural History

Pieter Schoubroeck was born in Heßheim in 1570 and became known as a representative of the Frankenthal landscape-painting tradition. His birthplace and his artistic classification offer different points of connection for a cultural-history visit: the first links him to Heßheim, while the second places his work within a named painting tradition.

Six large sculptures are located at the new Verbandsgemeinde town hall. They were created in 1996 around the theme “Unity in Diversity.” This adds another clearly dated art theme to the village’s older history. Access to the installation site may be subject to local regulations; take this into account when planning your visit.

Kerwe and Mini Golf

The Heßheim Kerwe is scheduled for the fourth weekend in August and runs from Friday to Tuesday. If you are planning a trip around this festival, check that year’s programme before setting your dates. This will allow you to plan your trip around the event dates actually scheduled.

Heßheim’s recreational facilities include a mini golf course. If you plan to visit during your stay, check local access arrangements before setting out.

Cycling in the wider destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis

In the wider destination of Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis, the Kraut-und-Rüben cycle route runs through green fields and villages and along the Rhine. Between Bockenheim and Schweigen-Rechtenbach, the route passes through the Palatinate wine-growing region and the Rhine plain. It is mostly flat and considered family-friendly; it is also signposted in both directions. Weather and maintenance can affect route conditions, and signs may change. So check current route information locally before setting out. Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis also has numerous other cycle routes through fields and floodplains.
