If you choose a destination based on its landscape, cycling route or local history, Tiefenbach offers three specific points of interest: the village lies on the stream of the same name at the northern edge of the Soonwald forest, a cycle route passes through it, and the former iron ore industry is part of its local history. You can use these themes as a guide when choosing a hotel, then decide which matter most for your stay.

Landscape along the Tiefenbach

The local area includes around 250 hectares of forest. Together with its location on the Tiefenbach and at the northern edge of the Soonwald forest, this gives the village a clear connection to the landscape: the stream and the forest are both key features. The figure gives a tangible sense of the forest, while the edge of the Soonwald identifies the geographical setting. If you choose destinations for their landscape, you can consider these features as criteria in their own right, alongside cycling and history.

Cycling and industrial history

The Schinderhannes-Soonwald cycle route passes through Tiefenbach between GemĂĽnden and Simmern. You can use these places to help plan your ride. Check the signs and route before setting off.

The former Märkerei mine was part of Tiefenbach’s iron ore industry in the 19th century. Ore was transported from the forest to the former railway station by cableway and suspended ore wagons. Local industrial history therefore covers not only mining, but also a specific means of transport and its destination. This account of the transport adds a technical dimension to the history of mining: the cableway and suspended ore wagons show how ore travelled from the forest to the former railway station.

Rhein-HunsrĂĽck as the wider setting

The wider travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Its landscapes include large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, including the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary. The wider region therefore encompasses a variety of landscapes, while Tiefenbach’s own setting is defined by its stream, the edge of the Soonwald and its forest. In the Rhein-Hunsrück district, parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was designated in 2002.

The Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. The district also has extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle routes along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. Check the route before planning a specific trip.

When route names are similar, it is worth checking which route each one refers to. For the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. These routes are distinct from the Schinderhannes-Soonwald cycle route through Tiefenbach. If you plan to include the bus line in your trip, check the timetable before travelling; future timetables may differ.
