Horn lies between the regional centers of Simmern and Kastellaun. Architectural history, art and literature offer specific topics to help plan a trip: these include the Protestant Baroque church, Horner Castle, Galerie Rehberg and the writer W. O. von Horn, who was born in Horn. Events and a themed route round out this local overview. If you are considering Horn as a destination, you can use these different interests as a guide.

History and Literature in Horn

The listed Protestant church in Horn is a Baroque hall church dating from 1781/82. The protected ensemble also includes the cemetery and its Baroque wall. South of Horn lies Horner Castle, a protected ring-wall fortification dating from the 10th or 11th century. Thus, a much older defensive structure and a Baroque church from the late 18th century stand side by side as distinct historical landmarks. Wilhelm Philip Oertel, known as W. O. von Horn, is also part of the town’s history: he was born in Horn in 1798 and wrote novels and short stories.

Gallery and Events

After 37 years of exhibiting in Mainz, Galerie Rehberg moved to Horn. Its focus is on sculptures that combine visual and tactile qualities. Sculptures are displayed outdoors in a large, old garden in Horn, providing an outdoor space for experiencing large-scale works. The gallery presents four exhibitions a year. Please inquire by email or phone before visiting.

Kunstfest Horn takes place every year in early September at the community center. The all-day, interdisciplinary festival features dance, literature, music and visual art. If you are traveling in September, check the program for that year. The annual International Volkswanderung is also one of TuS Horn’s main events. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific date separately.

Rhein-Hunsrück: The Regional Setting

The landscape of the Rhein-Hunsrück district stretches from the Hunsrück heights to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. It includes large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to its south, such as the Soonwald, also shape the district; in the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine forms its eastern boundary. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. The district has numerous hiking trails; its certified premium trails include the Soonwaldsteig, Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and Rheinburgenweg. Extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. The regional cuisine of the Rhein-Hunsrück district includes filled dumplings, Hunsrück-style grilled pork and game dishes; regional specialties and Middle Rhine wine are also highlights.
