Altenkirchen: Hiking, Nature and Village History
Accommodation in Altenkirchen
Altenkirchen lies in the Kohlbachtal valley. Different highlights can shape your stay: the Kirschenland Trail, natural features such as Höbelgraben and the Dicke Eiche, as well as the museum, church and local traditions. You can tailor your trip to your preferred hiking time, seasonal nature experiences or interest in village history and architecture.
Hiking the Kirschenland Trail
The Kirschenland Trail is a 22.6-kilometer hiking route, with an estimated duration of about six hours and 15 minutes. Together, the distance and approximate walking time give you an idea of how long a day’s hike will take. A red cherry logo marks the trail. Check the latest trail information before setting out. The route leads to the Höbelgraben recreation area, and the Kirschenland Museum Altenkirchen is also along the way. The Kirschenland Trail is also one of five routes in the Walkable History Book of the Oberes Glantal municipal association.
Nature spots in the Kohlbachtal valley
Every spring, thousands of cherry trees blossom around Altenkirchen. Another notable landscape feature is Höbelgraben: this deeply incised gorge is considered characteristic of the North Palatine Uplands. The Höbelgraben recreation area has a playground, a shelter, a barbecue area and a pond. Before you travel, check whether the area is open and whether its condition suits your plans.
The protected Dicke Eiche oak at Römerbrunnen can be described by two measurements: its trunk circumference is 5.40 meters, and it is about 28 meters tall. A rest area has been set up beneath the oak. The area’s natural attractions thus combine a seasonal highlight—the cherry blossom—with a distinctive landform and a single protected tree.
Museum, church and local traditions
The Kirschenland Museum Altenkirchen focuses on the history of the villages in the Kohlbachtal valley and the region’s former farming culture. The exhibition comprises seven rooms. Its subjects include coal mining in the Kohlbachtal and the wave of emigration in the 19th century, when more than 1,000 people left their home villages. Photo series and films complement the exhibition. A traditional village kitchen illustrates living conditions in the first half of the 20th century. The exhibits thus cover everything from village history and work to domestic life.
The Protestant parish church offers another historical highlight: it is a Baroque hall church with a tower whose origins date back to the Middle Ages and which is topped by a dome. Concerts are held regularly in the church; specific concert dates may vary. While the museum brings together different aspects of local and everyday history, the church stands out for its architecture and use as a concert venue.
The Kerwe, Altenkirchen’s church consecration festival, has been celebrated on the first Sunday in October since 1839. Specific festival arrangements may vary; if you want to plan your trip around the Kerwe, check the information for the relevant date. Together with the cherry blossom in spring, the festival offers a second seasonal point of reference for planning your trip.
