Föckelberg lies on the Potzberg and combines views across the hilly landscape with the Potzberg Wildlife Park and a history of mining. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the village, these themes offer different points of interest: the landscape and summit, falconry and wildlife watching, or the development of mercury mining. This lets you choose the focus that best suits your travel interests.

Landscape and Orientation

Föckelberg lies on the northwestern slope of the Potzberg; from there, views extend across the hilly landscape east of the village. The Potzberg summit and observation tower are approximately 1 km away as the crow flies and about 2 km by road. Both figures refer to the same destination but use different methods of measurement; the road distance may vary depending on the route.

Potzberg Wildlife Park: Animals and Falconry

The Potzberg Wildlife Park is home to numerous animal species, including red deer, wild boar, moose, reindeer, bison, ibex, Arctic foxes and raccoons. Andean condors, eagles, falcons, owls and bearded vultures are also represented.

The wildlife park’s main attraction is its falconry. The free-flight demonstrations feature eagles, vultures, falcons, kites and buzzards. There is also a special winter program. Dates and seasonal offerings may change. If a particular demonstration or the winter program is a deciding factor for your visit, check the latest dates in advance.

The park also offers wagons for families with children to borrow. If you plan to use this option, check availability and borrowing conditions in advance, as both may change.

Mercury Mining as Local History

Numerous mercury mines opened around the Potzberg summit in the second half of the 18th century. Mining brought workers to Föckelberg and thus became part of the village’s historical development. This history adds the Potzberg’s former use to the picture of its landscape and wildlife park.
