Ulmet: Hiking, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Ulmet
Ulmet has long been recognised as a tourist destination. Local highlights range from challenging hikes and protected landscapes to festivals and local history. You can therefore choose different areas of focus when planning your trip: a circular route with gorges, natural features in spring, or architectural and art history.
Hiking Trails and Guided Tours
The 7 Gorges Trail is a challenging circular route of around eight kilometres that passes seven gorges. With about 310 metres of ascent, the elevation profile is just as important as the distance when planning your hike. The trail starts in the centre of the village at “Dorfbrigg”. It runs mostly along natural paths; suitable footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are required. From the highest point, you can look out over the central Glan Valley and its mountains. At the Kimmelingschlucht gorge, the route also marks the municipal boundary between Erdesbach and Ulmet; there is a small waterfall there. Before setting off, check the route details, starting point and trail conditions locally, as conditions may vary by season.
The guided Ulmet–Esels tour offers a different experience: children ride donkeys from Erdesbach while adults walk. The route follows the Glan, crosses the Brückenberg and Wartekopf, and returns to Ulmet. The tours differ in how you get around: the Gorges Trail focuses on a circular route, natural paths and ascent, while the donkey tour is about travelling together using different modes of transport. Confirm the details of the bookable guided tour before your trip.
Landscape and Nature Conservation
The Wartekopf nature reserve in Ulmet covers 122 hectares. Its habitats include thermophilous oak woodland, rocks, dry grassland, beech forests, natural streams and species-rich nutrient-poor meadows. Alongside the specific route description of the Gorges Trail, this diverse protected landscape is another highlight. Access conditions may vary by season, so take this into account when planning a visit.
The Bärlauchschlucht gorge is a special seasonal highlight: in spring, it is considered unique in the region. If you include nature in your travel plans, you can enjoy this seasonal feature alongside the landscape features of Wartekopf, which are described as year-round attractions.
Festivals and Local Culture
The Gallusmarkt and Hammelfest are known both regionally and beyond the area. If you would like to combine your trip with either festival, check the event dates for your planned travel period.
The Flurskapelle St. Florus is considered one of the oldest churches in the central Glan Valley. Its architectural history is reflected in its different features: the chapel has a Romanesque chancel tower, a Baroque nave and a historic Stumm organ. Nearby is the Kappeler Bridge, which dates back to the 18th century. This location allows you to see religious architecture and a historic structure in close proximity.
The August Drumm Museum Room in Ulmet displays previously unpublished sculptures and reliefs by sculptor Prof. August Drumm, as well as images and information about his work. Other works by the artist can be found at the Flurskapelle and in the market square. These sites and works offer different insights into Drumm: the museum room through sculptures, reliefs and accompanying information, and the village itself through additional works in public spaces.
A hike can also include a visit outside Ulmet: the Ulmet–Kusel hiking trail offers the opportunity to visit the Erdesbach goat cheese dairy in Erdesbach. Check the visiting arrangements before planning your visit.
