Bitburg: Culture and City History
Accommodation in Bitburg
Bitburg combines city history, museums and a brewery tour. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can shape the character of your trip: there are different sides of the city to discover, from Roman and medieval traces to exhibitions and seasonal events.
Discover history in the cityscape
Parts of the Roman and medieval fortifications have been preserved at the Römermauer. The Liebfrauenkirche also preserves traces of earlier church buildings in its fabric. A Romanesque church building was followed by a Gothic single-nave hall church. Together, the two sites reveal different periods in Bitburg’s architectural history.
The multimedia Archaeological Trail leads through Bitburg’s city center. Information boards and steles provide background information; architectural features are also visualized using augmented reality in a 360° presentation. The trail is largely accessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs. However, two steps must be negotiated at one point—an important consideration if you need a completely step-free route.
Another perspective on the city’s history can be found at Pferdemarkt: the fountain there was inaugurated at the Old Town Festival in late May 1992 and is one of the stops on the Bitburg Walk. The bronze sculpture by artist Roger Delleré depicts the horse trade. This way, you encounter this historical theme not as an abstract concept, but as an artistic motif in the urban landscape.
Museums and cultural venues
The Kreismuseum Bitburg-PrĂĽm explores the history of the Bitburg-PrĂĽm district and the city of Bitburg through eleven key themes. These include agriculture, domestic life, traditional crafts and architecture in the Eifel. Special exhibitions, talks and other cultural events are regularly held in the assembly hall. The themes range from everyday life and work to architectural history, while the events program adds changing cultural offerings to the permanent themes.
Haus Beda brings together a range of cultural activities: it combines a painting and sculpture museum with exhibition rooms, a ballroom, spaces for artistic activities and the municipal library. The museum also includes the Fritz von Wille Collection, with around 80 paintings. The collection and other areas give the venue several artistic and public focuses, so a visit need not be limited to a single type of exhibition.
Events and brewery history
In summer, concerts are held in a beer-garden atmosphere at Konrad-Adenauer-Anlage in the city center. Bedaplatz serves different purposes: it is used as a market and car park, as well as for various larger events. The two places are therefore part of different sides of city life. If a particular concert or event is a deciding factor for your trip, plan your stay around the relevant dates.
A tour of the Bitburger Erlebniswelt offers insights into the history of the brewery, brewing ingredients and how the beers are made. The tour takes you through a historic brewery building whose foundations date back to the mid-19th century. After guided tours, guests are invited to enjoy a drink in the Bit-Lounge. As tasting options may change, check the latest visitor information before planning your visit.
Practical information for your stay
The Bitburger Land Tourist Information office is located at the Römermauer in the heart of Bitburg. It provides information about places to visit, as well as hiking and cycling tours. Its shop sells regional products, souvenirs from the Eifel and Bitburger Land, and hiking maps. As opening arrangements may change, it is advisable to check visitor information in advance.
A recent infrastructure project is also relevant for cyclists: on 23 October 2025, a cycling path section approximately 800 meters long between the district of Masholder and the city of Bitburg was officially opened to cyclists. Its length is a reference for this section; it does not describe an entire tour or a travel time. Along with the information about cycling tours available from the Tourist Information office, it offers a useful point of reference if cycling is part of your travel plans.
