Oberweiler is a municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm district. The village lies on the Finkenbach on a high ridge between the Nims and Prüm, at an elevation of approximately 430 metres above sea level. The streamside location, ridge and river names give the village a clear geographical context.

The municipal area covers 531 hectares, including 286 hectares of woodland. This means that just over half of the municipal area is forested. This area figure adds another aspect to the landscape’s elevation.

Village Location and Getting There

Oberweiler is connected by road via nearby junctions with the A60 and B51. It is approximately ten minutes from the district town of Bitburg. Together, the road connections and approximate travel time provide useful guidance for planning your journey.

Local History and Village Walk

The name Oberwiller is documented in 1473, when the settlement had five households. Until the French period, Oberweiler formed a lordship of its own in the Duchy of Luxembourg. The number of households offers a glimpse of the settlement’s size at the time, while the reference to its lordship places the village in its political history.

The Catholic filial church of St. Hubertus dates from 1950 and is a stop on a village walk. It links the historical perspective with a specific point of interest on a stroll through the village.

Hiking and Landscape

On a hike in Niederweiler, Oberweiler’s houses can be seen near the Geweberwald. A path climbs through the Geweberwald, where the trees include beech, oak and spruce. A regional trail along the Prüm Valley offers a nature-focused experience. These different perspectives range from views of the houses to the forest and the valley.

Gut Merkeshausen is also part of the landscape at the foot of the Prüm. The estate is privately owned and is associated with longer hikes. This information helps place it as a distinct feature of the landscape without implying that visitors can go inside.
