In Schauren, the village church with its architectural and organ history, gemstone cutting and hiking trails with different focuses are at the heart of things. The town’s history ranges from evidence of possible early settlement to historic church and craft traditions. For planning purposes, you can also distinguish between the STUMM Organ Trail, where Schauren is one stop, and the Stumm Ironworks Trail, which has a listed access point in the town.

Church, Organ and Architectural History

The church in Schauren was built in 1767 to plans by local carpenter Johann Nicolaus Wenz. All roof surfaces are covered with slate from the region. A large church bell was cast as early as 1480, making it older than the church building. Inside is a Stumm organ from 1780, housed in a Rococo case. The building plans, slate roofing, bell and organ point to different aspects of local church and craft history.

Schauren Church is considered the only fully preserved original example among the characteristic churches of the Hunsrück. Ceiling paintings are located above the organ in the two western bays. The German Foundation for Monument Protection provided €10,000 for their restoration. The church thus offers several specific topics to explore: its construction period, regional slate roofing and furnishings from different eras.

Early Traces and Gemstone Craft

Several prehistoric graves discovered in the Schauren area point to possible settlement beginnings in the early Celtic Iron Age. Another historical trace leads to gemstone cutting: Schauren is associated with a tradition of gemstone craft. Of the many gemstone businesses that once operated there, only a few have survived the changes in the craft. Visitors are welcome to explore the gemstone workshops and exhibition rooms in Schauren. These insights into craftsmanship complement the church and organ history with another cultural theme.

Hiking Trails and Landscape

Schauren is a stop on the STUMM Organ Trail. It combines woodland and meadows with historic Stumm organs. An audio library makes it possible to hear the organs even when the churches are closed. Music and landscape are thus both part of this trail’s character.

The Stumm Ironworks Trail is considered a 15.5-kilometre premium hiking route in the HunsrĂĽck. An access point from Schauren is listed at TalstraĂźe 2; the trail is about 500 metres from there. The landscape features described include views from uplands as well as forested valleys and stream valleys. The route passes through the Obere Nahe FFH protected area and is accessible by public transport. When planning, you can consider the trail length and the distance between the listed access point and the trail separately. Check route details and current public transport connections before your hike. The two trails differ in focus: the STUMM Organ Trail highlights historic organs and its audio offering, while the Stumm Ironworks Trail is defined by its length and landscape.
