Achtelsbach combines a landscape shaped by forests, fields and meadows with a listed church and a history of reconstruction and historic furnishings. Both are worth considering when planning your trip: the surrounding area is ideal for long walks and hikes. When it comes to accommodation, it is worth making a clear distinction: the Landheim Achtelsbach is a self-catering youth and recreation centre, a different type of accommodation from a hotel.

Nature and hiking in Achtelsbach

Around two-thirds of Achtelsbach’s area is forested; a large part of this forest lies within the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park. The entire settlement is located in Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Forests, fields and meadows surround the village and are ideal for long walks and hikes. If you enjoy spending time outdoors, you can make the landscape and the length of hike you prefer the focus of your stay.

Hiking in the wider Birkenfeld destination

The Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig is another regional hiking option in the wider Birkenfeld destination. The German Hiking Institute certifies it as a premium trail. The route runs mainly along natural paths through Saar-HunsrĂĽck Nature Park and HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park; one section passes through the Birkenfeld collective municipality. The trail therefore offers a regional option for guests who want to include a long-distance hiking trail in their plans, in addition to longer walks.

Church history and furnishings

A fire on 8 January 2010 severely damaged the tower and gallery of the listed church. It was subsequently rebuilt, and its reopening was celebrated with a church service on 31 July. The furnishings of St. Ulrich Church include an organ installed in 1893 by Gebr. Oberlinger of Windesheim near Bad Kreuznach. The cast-steel bells date from 1922. A replacement organ for Achtelsbach village church was played publicly for the first time during a church service on 2 June 2013. Together, the fire, reconstruction and the various dates associated with the furnishings tell different chapters in the church’s history.

The Landheim Achtelsbach

The Landheim is housed in a former farmhouse built around 1825. It serves as a self-catering youth and recreation centre and is rented out on a self-catering basis. The centre is suitable for training courses, hiking groups and family stays, as well as music and theatre groups, workshops and woodworking courses. This setup is particularly relevant for groups who want to organise their own stay. The grounds include more than 5,000 m² of play and camping areas, through which the small Achtelsbach stream flows. Before booking, it is advisable to confirm that the planned use is permitted and that the centre is available on your chosen dates.

Distances for reference

The Landheim is approximately 7 km from Birkenfeld, the Birkenfeld motorway exit and NeubrĂĽcke railway station. Use these distances as a rough guide and check the current route before departure.
