Petersquelle and Sauerbrunnen are steeped in a long history of springs, while the Enchanted Forest offers routes of varying lengths. There is also an e-bike loop that includes the Enchanted Forest and Sauerbrunnen in Oberhambach. This allows you to consider the history of the springs, hiking and cycling as different focal points when planning your trip.

Petersquelle, Sauerbrunnen and their history

The Petersquelle and Sauerbrunnen spring complex reopened to visitors in 2015. The history of collecting water at both springs goes back more than 2,000 years. Written records of spa operations at the site date from the late 15th century; the spa house was completed in 1791. This brings together the springs’ very long history of use, the documented history of the spa and a building with a specific completion date.

The site also includes an information area about water and a watercourse with modern play equipment. Here, you can encounter the subject of water as a historic spring, as a topic for learning about, and in a playful form.

HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park lies directly beside the Petersquelle and Sauerbrunnen site.

Trails in the Enchanted Forest

The Enchanted Forest is classified as a premium walking trail in the HunsrĂĽck; this classification may be updated. It is considered an easy walk, with a few somewhat more challenging sections. Trail conditions may change depending on the season, so check them before setting out.

Two distances should be distinguished when comparing routes: the Enchanted Forest route is around 4 km long, runs around Hambacher Felsen and includes numerous activity stations. The “Rund um den Zauberwald” dream trail is approximately 10 km long. The Enchanted Forest route is therefore the shorter option, while the dream trail is a considerably longer hike.

The dream trail connects ancient forests, species-rich meadows and small historic sites. The route therefore brings together landscape and history; its length helps distinguish this experience from the shorter Enchanted Forest route.

The Enchanted Forest is accessible by public transport. As connections and timetables may change, check the latest information before setting off. To reach it by road, take the turnoff from the B269 near Oberhambach towards HunsrĂĽck-Ferienpark Hambachtal. After 200 metres, turn left towards the Enchanted Forest parking area. Check local road conditions and parking regulations before your journey.

Exploring by e-bike

The RadLust HimmelReich loop is a moderate 43.7 km e-bike route. It includes the Enchanted Forest and Sauerbrunnen in Oberhambach; a detour leads to Sauerbrunnen and Petersquelle. At this length, it is considerably longer than either of the two hiking routes. Its moderate rating and e-bike focus are additional points of reference when comparing the loop with the shorter walking trails.
