Oberkirn lies above the confluence of the Eschenbach and Kyr, sheltered by wooded hills. Two themes are particularly important to the town’s history: its churches and former roofing-slate mining. The Rhaunen–Oberkirn–Hausen hiking route is another option for your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel in Oberkirn, these highlights can help you plan your visit: would you like to focus mainly on architectural history, traces of mining, or a hike?

Churches and Layers of History

The Protestant church stands on the upper edge of the village, above the foundations of a Roman country house, a villa rustica. The present church was built in a simple Gothic style a few years before 1400. Throughout Oberkirn’s history, the church served as the burial place of the Schenken zu Schmidtburg. A figurative tombstone for Franz Brune von Schmidtburg, who died in 1573, is displayed on the exterior wall. Roman foundations, medieval architecture and a grave monument bearing a named attribution come together here as distinct points of historical reference.

The Catholic church creates a different focal point: it stands in the centre of the village on a massive slate slope and was consecrated in 1794. Their locations and historical dates clearly distinguish the two churches: one stands on the upper edge of the village, the other in the centre; each takes you back to a different period.

Traces of Slate Mining

Roofing-slate mining in 21 nearby mines was Oberkirn’s main livelihood until the mid-20th century. Numerous spoil heaps and several dozen mine entrances remain on the slope of the Kyrbach valley as traces of this era. The importance of mining can be understood both through its role as a source of livelihood and through the features it left in the landscape.

Beyond the Kyrbach bridge, a figure of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, stands in a rock niche. A large wayside cross stands on the hill above Oberkirn, beside the road to Schwerbach. The figure of Barbara connects local mining with its patron saint; the cross adds another religious landmark in the landscape.
