Herrstein combines a largely preserved medieval townscape with a local museum and the Medieval Trail. This offers different starting points for planning a stay: historic buildings, Herrstein’s local history and a hiking route that begins and ends in Herrstein.

Half-Timbered Houses and Local History

The historic town center contains numerous restored half-timbered houses dating from 1600 to 1800. Herrstein preserves a largely intact medieval town in the Nahe-HunsrĂĽck region. The medieval character of the townscape thus blends with half-timbered buildings from a later, clearly dated period.

Herrstein was first mentioned in a document on April 9, 1279. In 1428, the Count of Sponheim granted the town its charter. These are two distinct points of reference in the town’s history: its first documented mention and the later granting of town rights.

Museum and Baking Tradition

The local history museum is housed in a school building dating from 1848/49. The exhibition on the lower floor covers geology as well as the prehistoric and early historic periods in the Herrstein area. The exhibits may change over time. If a particular topic is important for your visit, check in advance whether it is currently on display.

The museum includes a fully operational former communal bakehouse, locally known as a Backes. The former Backes is associated with the traditional making of original Hunsrück farmers’ bread using sourdough. The bakehouse and baking tradition thus complement the historical themes with a craft and culinary dimension.

Stops on the Discovery Tour

A discovery tour of Herrstein takes in the clock tower, castle and church, as well as the town wall and moat. Other stops include the Bell Tower, the Schinderhannes Tower and the battlement walk. The tour therefore extends beyond the half-timbered houses to other buildings and parts of the historic fortifications. The tour’s formats and availability may change; if they are important for your plans, check in advance.

The Medieval Trail

The Medieval Trail begins in the medieval town center; Herrstein is also its starting and ending point. The route is about 8.5 kilometers long. It runs mostly on paths with natural surfaces; 72 percent of the route is unpaved. Landscape features include watercourses, forest edges, rock formations and viewpoints.

The route can therefore be described both by its approximate length and by its varied paths and landscapes. Conditions may change seasonally. Check the route details before setting out and take current trail conditions into account when planning.

Getting There and Motorhome Parking

Herrstein provides three motorhome parking spaces near the historic town center. Access is via the B41 and then the L160 through Fischbach. Check the latest information about the parking spaces before travelling. Roadworks or traffic restrictions may also affect access.
