Discover Abentheuer: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Abentheuer
Abentheuer lies at the foot of the Schwarzwälder Hochwald and is a municipality in the national park. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1350. The main features shaping travel plans and possible activities are the Trauntal Höhenweg, historical traces of iron smelting and a cycling route connected with Abentheuer. This lets you combine nature and local history.
Landscape and hiking route
The Hunsrück-Hochwald region encompasses fields, forests, rocks and moors. A specific starting point for hikers is the Trauntal Höhenweg: it is about 14 kilometres long and passes through meadows and fields, through a stream valley, and by viewpoints and rock formations. At Vorkastell and Wehlenstein, you can enjoy views across the surrounding countryside. The route’s length and varied landscape provide two different points of reference when planning a hike.
History is also present along the Trauntal Höhenweg. The route passes Saustäbel, once used as woodland pasture; historical stories are explained along the way. Another focal point is Abentheurer Hütte: this is where the Saarland’s iron industry began, and iron was smelted there until the 19th century. The same route therefore brings together traces of earlier land use and the history of ironworking.
Restaurants on or near the Trauntal Höhenweg serve rustic cuisine in a family-friendly atmosphere. As availability can change, it is best to check in advance whether a visit fits your plans.
Cycling and other activities
The RadLust-Schleife WasserTräume starts in Birkenfeld and continues across Brücken to Abentheuer. It passes a historic ironworks and then follows the edge of the national park along the old Erzweg towards the Saarland border. The stretch from Brücken to Abentheuer is therefore a specific point of reference for a cycling trip. Check route conditions before setting off.
Goloka Dhama adds another area of interest. Visitors can attend kirtans, religious services and talks there. There are woodland paths around the temple for walks. If you plan a visit, check the latest dates and visitor arrangements in advance; access and trail conditions may also change.
Getting there and finding your way
Bus route 880 connects Neubrücke, Birkenfeld, Brücken, Abentheuer and other destinations. The route is considered a suitable connection for hikes on the Trauntal Höhenweg and the Börfinker Ochsentour. Check the current timetable for your travel day before deciding how to get there or where to start your hike.
More topics in the wider Birkenfeld destination
Part of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld municipal association, in the wider Birkenfeld destination. The Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans, Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs, ironworking in Birkenfeld district, a reconstructed old classroom from around 1930, and the Oldenburg period. Another cultural highlight is the 2.5-kilometre-long Götterallee between Schwollen and Leisel, with ten colourful, life-size figures of gods.
The nature trails in the Birkenfeld destination also have a range of different themes. The 1-kilometre Obere Nahe Water Discovery Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach has four access points and offers information about aquatic creatures such as barbel and gudgeon, water birds such as kingfishers and white-throated dippers, and dragonfly species. The “In the Land of Kites, Storks and Co.” nature trail has 18 stations around Niederhambach, Schmißberg and Rimsberg. Near Schmißberg, highlights include an aviary with the stork pair Lotte and Bernie, as well as information about the habitats of red kites, black storks and other species.
The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Tour around Börfink and Thranenweier offers a different perspective on the landscape. Information boards cover rare and endangered arnica meadows, how they formed and how they are preserved, as well as local biodiversity. The regional themes therefore differ considerably: the Water Discovery Trail focuses on aquatic creatures, while the Island Tour highlights arnica meadows.
