Horbruch is considered a small, forested Hunsrück settlement on the edge of the watershed between the Moselle and Nahe rivers. The Via Molarum connects local hiking with the theme of former mills; historic routes and a cult site in the surrounding area add another perspective. This makes landscape and history central to planning your trip.

The Via Molarum: Hiking with a Mill Theme

The Via Molarum is a 15.5-kilometre premium hiking trail. It passes through Horbruch, Hirschfeld, Wahlenau and Krummenau; Horbruch is one of the route’s starting points. You can begin the hike at the car park by the community centre on Hochscheider Straße. The route was certified in 2024, and its hiking quality seal is valid until April 2027.

The trail passes through fields and stretches of woodland, with wide-ranging views and meadow valleys along the way. You will come across former mills or traces of them. Information boards explain the route’s mill theme. The landscape and regional mill history are therefore both part of what makes the Via Molarum distinctive. The places along the route also give you a clear idea of which municipalities the trail passes through.

Historic Routes and Roman Traces

The Roman Antoniusstraße runs along the edge of Horbruch. As a long-distance hiking trail, it leads from the Rhine to the Moselle. Pilgrims can receive a stamp for their pilgrim passport at the Historische Schlossmühle in Horbruch. If you are counting on this, check in advance whether the stamp is currently available.

Around three kilometres from Horbruch, a temple dating from Celtic times was expanded by the Romans into a cult site in the 2nd century AD. Finds include altars and almost life-size statues of Sirona and Apollo. Other finds are on display at the Landesmuseum Trier. The cult site thus adds its own historical dimension to the area around Horbruch, while the Antoniusstraße passes along the edge of the village as a long-distance route.

Getting to Horbruch and Places to Eat

Horbruch has no direct public transport connections. Take this into account when planning your journey and check current services before your visit. The car park at the community centre on Hochscheider Straße is one possible landmark for starting the Via Molarum.

There are two places to eat along the Via Molarum in Horbruch: Scherers Landgasthof and the Hotel-Restaurant Historische Schlossmühle. If you plan to stop for a meal, check the opening hours in advance. This lets you adapt your hiking plans to what is available locally without assuming that a visit will be possible at a particular time.

Culture in the Wider Birkenfeld Destination

You can find additional destinations in the wider Birkenfeld destination; they should not be confused with attractions in Horbruch. The Landesmuseum Birkenfeld has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbach family; the iron industry in the Birkenfeld district; an old classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg period.

Also in the wider Birkenfeld destination is the 2.5-kilometre Götterallee between the local municipalities of Schwollen and Leisel. Ten colourful, life-size figures of gods stand along the route. The museum and the Götterallee offer different cultural perspectives: one focuses on historical permanent exhibitions, while the other features figures along a path. For your selection, this means an addition to Horbruch’s local hiking and history themes, not another attraction in the same place.
