Osann-Monzel: Hiking, Vineyards and Local History
Accommodation in Osann-Monzel
In Osann-Monzel, hiking trails with different stages meet winegrowing, historic buildings and viewpoints. When planning your stay, these themes can help you choose the focus of your trip: hiking routes, insights into the wine landscape or local history. The routes mentioned can be distinguished by their respective destinations and stops.
Hiking Trails and Their Stops
The Moselsteig leads to Osann-Monzel as a stage destination and enters the village via Altrichstraße. The fifth stage of the Way of St. James ends in Osann-Monzel. The route passes a large-scale wildlife conservation area and continues to the “Kätzchen” rest area in the village. Thus, in addition to its stage destination, the Way of St. James also offers notable stops along the way.
Another route is the Schiffswanderweg. It begins in Osann and leads from Monzel to Kesten via Moselstraße. In the center of Monzel, it passes the Quereinhäuser: historic farmhouses or agricultural buildings, built mainly around 1815 during the Neoclassical period. The Monzeler Hüttenkopfweg, in turn, begins in Osann-Monzel in a side valley of the Moselle. Millions of years ago, a bend in the Moselle flowed through this valley. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.
Vineyards and Viewpoints
Osann-Monzel has one of the largest vineyard areas on the Middle Moselle: around 220 hectares of planted vineyard land, cultivated by 80 full-time and part-time winegrowers. Vineyards also feature prominently in the themes of several viewpoints. From the Monzel shelter on the path to the Hüttenkopf, you can take in views of the vineyards and the Moselle Valley.
The Monzeler Hüttenkopf is 423.4 meters high and the second-highest elevation in the Moselle Hills. From the Hüttenkopf viewpoint, you can see the “Monzeler Kätzchen” and “Osanner Rosenberg” vineyard sites. The Monzeler Kätzchen viewpoint is reached through the vineyards; from there, the view extends as far as Bernkastel-Kues. The named views therefore have different focal points: the vineyard sites take center stage at the Hüttenkopf viewpoint, while the view from Monzeler Kätzchen reaches as far as Bernkastel-Kues.
Churches and Local History
The Catholic parish church of St. Peter in Osann was built in the Baroque style in 1766/67. Monzel has a church dating from 1784. The Osann war memorial provides two further historical points of interest; it is dedicated to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Designed as a small, open round temple, it stands in a green space enclosed by a low rubble-stone wall and featuring mature trees.
Nature and Cycling Route
The Osann-Monzel/Kesten Lizard Information Point in the vineyards between Osann-Monzel and Kesten provides information about lizards. This adds a nature theme to the wine landscape and the historic sites in the villages. For cyclists, the Moselhöhenradweg – Die Moselloreleytour – reaches a rest area on the outskirts of Monzel, where there is a place to take a break. As infrastructure may change due to local maintenance work, it is advisable to check the condition of this rest area before your ride.
If you are looking for a hotel in Osann-Monzel, you can first consider which aspects of your stay you would like to focus on: stages and trail stops, views of the vineyards or historic townscapes. These different themes offer concrete points to help you decide.
