Get to know Heidweiler through specific local themes: the history of technology, religious heritage and features of the village landscape. If you are planning a stay, these different points of interest can help you decide what appeals to you.

Fendt Collection and village character

The Fendt tractor collection has existed since 1987. It comprises tractors built between 1931 and 1968, as well as model tractors, brochures and books. Two time periods should be distinguished: 1987 marks the founding of the collection, while 1931 to 1968 is the production period of the tractors. The collection thus brings together historic vehicles, models and printed materials.

The village landscape includes restored Trier-style transverse houses. Other notable features are an old washhouse, the Gerberhäuschen and the Bendersbach. The Bendersbach is considered appealing to children. These features complement the focus on technology with architectural heritage and a natural element, though they do not all offer the same kind of experience.

Wayside chapel and procession

East of Heidweiler, by the Bendersbach, stands the small Heiligenhäuschen, a wayside chapel dating from 1735. Every year at the beginning of May, a procession takes place to the parish church. The date of the chapel and the recurring event offer two different points of connection to religious heritage: the history of the chapel and a custom observed throughout the year.

In the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination

At the level of the wider Bernkastel-Wittlich destination, the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, with its abundance of forests and meadows, come together. This provides a broad setting for the destination’s landscapes. For hiking and winter sports, there is the 816-metre-high Erbeskopf: it is a place to hike and offers a wide range of winter sports activities. The National Park Gate at the Erbeskopf also provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition focuses on forests and moors.

The cultural attractions are also varied. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502, and Klausen is a destination for pilgrims every year. The Zylinderhaus showcases 90 years of German automotive history with more than 100 cars, motorcycles and vans. The Cusanus Birthplace in Kues has a permanent exhibition about Nicholas of Cusa; the building is used as a museum and event venue. The wider destination thus offers different ways to explore its heritage: pilgrimage, automotive history and the life and work of Nicholas of Cusa.

The route details can help you compare hiking options. The Manderscheid Castle Trail is a moderate 5.4-kilometre circular route around the castles of Manderscheid; the stated duration is two hours. The Castle via Ferrata around the two castles consists of three stages and is about four kilometres long in total, one kilometre of which is secured with cables. The routes therefore differ in their stated features: for the Castle Trail, the circular route, difficulty and duration are provided; for the via ferrata, the stages and cable-secured section are given.
