Meisenheim combines a protected old town with hiking routes. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether you would like to focus mainly on the town’s history, a hike or both. The old town, the castle church and two different routes offer specific points of interest.

Explore the old town independently

Meisenheim’s old town is a well-preserved ensemble and is protected as a historic monument. Its romantic lanes are home to historic half-timbered houses and stately aristocratic residences. A downloadable historic town walk lets you explore independently. You can plan your visit as you like or use the walk as a historical thread to follow.

The castle church and former castle

The late Gothic castle church is considered Meisenheim’s most imposing landmark. Master builder Philipp von Gmünd built it between 1479 and 1504. You can view the church from both inside and out. The castle church and the Herzog-Wolfgang-Haus are the only surviving remains of the former castle. Here, the late Gothic church architecture connects with the history of the former castle.

Comparing hiking routes

The Palatinate Heights Trail runs from Winnweiler to Wolfstein, passing through Meisenheim. The route is characterized by open hilly landscapes, expansive views and small forests. The Juché premium hiking route starts at the Untertor, crosses to the eastern side of the Glan and reaches a viewpoint overlooking the historic old town.

The routes have different focuses: Meisenheim lies between two towns along the Palatinate Heights Trail, while the Juché route starts at the Untertor and leads to a viewpoint above the old town. When choosing your route, you can weigh up whether you would prefer to focus on the scenery along the Heights Trail or on views of the town.

Getting to Meisenheim and culture in Bad Kreuznach

Bus connections to Meisenheim are available from the railway stations in Lauterecken and Bad Sobernheim. Check current timetables before your trip so you can plan your connection for the day of travel.

The broader destination of Bad Kreuznach also includes the town’s bridge houses, which are part of its cultural and historical heritage. They were built from 1480 onward due to a lack of space. The half-timbered buildings stand on piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which dates to around 1300. Since 1985/86, the museums of the town of Bad Kreuznach have been housed in the listed former Bangert manor house, set in a historic park. The Salinental between Bad Kreuznach and Bad Münster is a unique cultural landscape steeped in history.

Other regional attractions are located elsewhere in the broader destination: The Nahe-Glan holiday region is shaped by the Nahe and Glan rivers, as well as meadows, forests and vineyards. Windesheim is home to the orgel ART Museum, a musical instrument museum that is unique of its kind in Germany. In Bad Sobernheim, the barefoot path is a summer leisure activity. The 3.5-kilometre footpath leads to the Nahe and includes a clay-treading pool, an agility course and various types of surface.
