Bad Kreuznach offers a range of cultural highlights: the history of the city and its spa, Roman finds and puppet theatre culture.

Museums at the historic Bangert Estate

The KulturViertel at the historic Bangert Estate is home to the Schlosspark Museum, the Römerhalle and the Museum of Puppet Theatre Culture. The three institutions are located in a historic park. Their themes range from the history of Bad Kreuznach to Roman artefacts and international puppet theatre traditions—offering a varied selection for a range of cultural interests.

The Schlosspark Museum presents collections relating to the estate, the history of the city and spa town, and the Cauer family of sculptors. In the neighbouring Römerhalle, visitors can see Roman-era artefacts and two significant mosaic floors from a nearby Roman villa. The city’s history and archaeological finds are thus presented side by side in different buildings.

The PuK is devoted to puppet theatre across 900 square metres, with displays designed for all generations. These include marionettes from the Augsburger Puppenkiste, international puppet-playing traditions and interactive stations. Visitors particularly interested in theatrical forms and their varied traditions will find a different focus here from the city-history and archaeological collections.

History and landscape in the destination

Outside the museums, too, architectural history and landscape shape the cultural perspective on Bad Kreuznach. The bridge houses were built from 1480 onwards because of a lack of space. They are half-timbered buildings on the piers of the old Nahe Bridge, which was built around 1300. The bridge is therefore considerably older than the houses standing on its piers. The Salinental valley between Bad Kreuznach and Bad MĂĽnster is a cultural landscape steeped in history.

The wider Bad Kreuznach destination also includes attractions in other towns. In Bad Sobernheim, a 3.5-kilometre barefoot trail leads to the Nahe, with clay-treading pools, an agility course and a variety of surfaces. It is a summer leisure activity. The Hahnenbachtal Trail in the Kirner Land is certified as a Dream Loop and took first place in the day hikes category of the “Germany’s Most Beautiful Hiking Trails” competition in 2012. The organ ART Museum in Windesheim is a musical instrument museum that is unique of its kind in Germany. The attractions differ in subject and format: the barefoot trail is a route with different surfaces, the Hahnenbachtal Trail is an award-winning day hike, and the museum is dedicated to musical instruments. Within the wider Bad Kreuznach destination, the Felseneremitage in Bretzenheim can be visited from the outside year-round and without a guided tour; the place of worship is carved entirely into the rock.
