Bevergern: Castle, Building History and Pättken

Castle and Milling History in Bevergern
Burg Bevergern is an archaeological monument and is significant to the history of Bevergern, the Tecklenburger Land and the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. Its historical importance therefore extends beyond local history. Levedags Mühle in Bevergern offers a different perspective: it was built in 1804 on the foundations of an old gun tower. The mill’s construction date and the older tower that served as its structural foundation connect two distinct periods. The castle and mill thus represent different aspects of Bevergern’s history: the castle’s significance as an archaeological monument and the construction of a mill on an older foundation.
Buildings in the Wider Destination of Hörstel
The wider destination of Hörstel includes the parish church of St. Marien in Bevergern. It is a late Gothic hall church with a polygonal choir dating from the 15th century and richly decorated interiors. In 1686, the church tower was raised using dressed stones from Burg Bevergern, which was demolished by blasting in 1680; further extensions followed in 1759, 1767 and 1937. This sequence reveals several construction phases in the church building.
The Küsterei in Bevergern is also one of the town’s oldest houses. This half-timbered gabled house with a half-hipped roof dates from 1663. Formerly a farmer-burgher’s house, it has a large threshing floor behind the entrance gate. These historical architectural features differ from those of the parish church: half-timbering, roof shape and the threshing floor describe the Küsterei, while the construction phases and late Gothic church building are the focus at St. Marien.
Trails and Landscape
The Nonnenpättken was the old escape route used by the canonesses of Gravenhorst Monastery. In the unsettled times after the Thirty Years’ War, they used it to reach their townhouse in Bevergern when danger threatened. This history connects Gravenhorst Monastery and Bevergern through a specific former function of the path.
The Teutoschleife Bevergerner Pättken offers a different perspective. It climbs up to the Huckberg, with approximately 40 metres of elevation to overcome. From the crest of the narrow ridge, there are views across the Tecklenburger Land. While the Nonnenpättken is defined by its historical function, the Teutoschleife is characterised by the climb and the views from the ridge.
In the wider destination of Hörstel, the landscape is shaped by the transition from the Münsterland Park Landscape to the Teutoburg Forest; the Huckberg is 95 metres high. This figure refers to the height of the Huckberg, while the approximately 40 metres refers to the elevation gained on the Teutoschleife. The two figures therefore describe different measurements.
Culture and Recreation in the Wider Destination of Hörstel
For more than ten years, the DA Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst in the wider destination of Hörstel has offered a space to experience contemporary, cross-disciplinary art and culture, and to participate and think critically. Its programme includes tours about the monastery’s history and art, as well as theatrical tours with historical characters on the first and third Sunday of each month. Group tours can be booked by arrangement. If you are planning a tour, check the dates before your visit.
The former Gravenhorst Monastery, with its church, convent buildings, mill, mill pond, bakery and brewery, monastery wall and historic bridges, conveys the impression of an almost completely preserved monastic complex. This is a different cultural-historical focus from the individual buildings in Bevergern: here, the relationship between the various elements defines the picture of the former monastery complex.
The 57-hectare Torfmoor recreational area in Hörstel also includes the lake of the same name, Torfmoorsee. Visitors can sail, fish and surf on the lake. A sandy beach and a sunbathing lawn are ideal for sunbathing and relaxing. These activities on the water complement the cultural focus of the wider destination.
