Odenthal: Hiking, Landscape and History
Accommodation in Odenthal
Odenthal offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails, cycling routes and cultural and historical sights. If you are looking for a hotel in Odenthal, you can use these themes to assess whether the destination suits your interests. The routes vary in length, layout and theme; there is also practical information about getting there and finding your way around locally.
Hiking trails with different character
The Odenthal Culture and Forest Nature Trail is a signposted circular route of about 3.8 kilometers, which takes approximately 1.5 hours. The Bergisches Land Comfort Walk is around 1.4 kilometers long and runs around Altenberg Cathedral. There are exhibitions and rest areas along the way. The information on length and duration will help you gauge the scope of the two routes; they also differ in their focus.
The Altenberg Monastic Landscape Trail is also a circular route. Ten information boards explore monastic life in Altenberg and its immediate surroundings. The Water Route takes a different approach: it follows the DhĂĽnn River to the GroĂźe DhĂĽnn Reservoir. This gives you a choice between a route focused on monastic life and one along the river.
Odenthal’s hiking trails are part of a well-marked network. Trail conditions can change, so check the conditions and markings before setting out. Conditions on the Monastic Landscape Trail and the Water Route can vary seasonally. For the Bergisches Land Comfort Walk, you should also check accessibility in advance.
The Bergisches Land Comfort Walk also offers an opportunity to stop for a meal: at the end, there are nearby places to eat serving Bergische waffles, Potthucke and herb salads. Availability and menus may change. Check the current offerings if you plan to stop there.
Altenberg and local history
Altenberg Cathedral was built as a Gothic church between 1259 and 1379 and served for centuries as the burial church of the Counts of Berg. The surviving buildings of the former monastery that visitors can see include St. Mark’s Chapel, the Old Brewery, Altenberger Hof, the Baroque Gate and the Kitchen Courtyard. This means that Altenberg’s history extends beyond the cathedral to other buildings in the former monastery complex.
In the historic town center, half-timbered houses stand around the Romanesque Church of St. Pankratius, one of the oldest churches in the Bergisches Land. Another feature of cultural and historical interest is the bronze Witch’s Fountain, which recalls the history of the witch trials in Odenthal. The church, half-timbered houses and fountain represent different aspects of local history.
Landscape and cycling
Hiking in Odenthal and Altenberg takes you through green, gently rolling countryside with forests, meadows and stream valleys. The DhĂĽnn and Eifgenbach rivers are also associated with Odenthal. Cycling routes pass through river valleys and over ridges, with scenic views. When planning your trip, you can choose between hiking and cycling and take into account the landscape features described for each.
