A stay in Lennestadt can focus on a range of interests: cycling tours, hiking trails and cultural history. Lennestadt is one of the four main towns on the SauerlandRadring; in addition to the marked hiking trails, Grevenbrück and the city museum offer historical themes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Lennestadt, considering the focus of your trip may help you choose.

Cycling on the SauerlandRadring

Lennestadt is one of the four main towns on the SauerlandRadring. There are also cycle paths along rivers and on former railway lines. The cycling network uses the “Radeln nach Zahlen” system, with continuous numbering; you can take the numbers into account when planning your tour.

The SauerlandRadring is accessible by public transport from GrevenbrĂĽck and Altenhundem railway stations. Check your connection before travelling to make sure the station links suit your particular journey. This lets you plan your route and your public transport journey separately.

Hiking and activities at Hohe Bracht

Lennestadt is part of the Sauerland hiking villages, a certified quality region under the “Wanderbares Deutschland” programme. The hiking network is marked and clearly signposted. The hiking area shared by Lennestadt and Kirchhundem includes long-distance trails, themed routes and nature trails. The Rothaarsteig is known as the “Trail of the Senses”. This means there are different types of routes to consider: longer hiking trails, themed routes and nature trails.

Activities at Hohe Bracht include hiking, walking, cycling and winter sports; winter sports depend on seasonal conditions. The Hohe Bracht observation tower stands at an elevation of 588 m. Your choice between hiking, cycling and winter sports therefore also depends on which activity you’re planning for your trip and the time of year you’ll be there.

Peperburg and cultural history

Peperburg is a castle ruin in Grevenbrück, within the Breiter Hagen nature reserve. It was the oldest seat of lordship in the eastern Südsauerland and was in use from the first half of the 12th century until the last decades of the 13th century. Only the foundations of the castle’s southern section remain. While Peperburg represents medieval history of lordship, caves near Grevenbrück contain the oldest known traces of human presence in the Lennestadt area.

The permanent exhibition “43/1 – Unity in Diversity” at the Lennestadt City Museum presents the history of Lennestadt and its surroundings. The exhibition content may evolve. The limestone quarry beside Peperburg is associated with the Sauerland Soul Places. Archaeological, medieval and cultural themes can thus be found side by side in and around Grevenbrück, although they do not describe the same period or the same type of place.
