Kirchhundem: Nature, Hiking and Culture
Accommodation in Kirchhundem
In Kirchhundem, nature, hiking trails and cultural sites offer different options for a stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Kirchhundem, your planned excursions can help you choose: would you mainly like to hike, explore natural areas or discover cultural history?
Cultural Sites and Village History
In Kirchhundem-Silberg, the Schrabben Hof cultural heritage site combines a local history museum with a nostalgic café, an old bakehouse, a beer garden, a festival barn, a pub, a second-hand goods barn and a theatre barn. Most of the building complex is a listed heritage site, and it offers a wide range of cultural activities. The museum explores life in a Sauerland village and the history of mining in Silberg across approximately 250 m². It also provides information about the region’s nature reserves, as well as fossils and minerals that tell the story of the Earth.
Another cultural highlight is in Oberhundem: the Embroidery Museum is housed in a listed rectory dating from 1685. It displays antique embroidery in restored historic rooms. The local offerings thus range from village life and mining in Silberg to historic crafts in Oberhundem.
Protected Area, Views and Landscape
The Schwarzbach system nature reserve, including Haberg and Krenkeltal, covers 312 hectares and consists of six separate areas. Its defining feature is the Schwarzbach and Meinscheidbach streams and their tributaries, which form an extensive, highly branched system in a largely natural state. An abandoned railway tunnel between Krenkeltal and Schwarzbachtal is also an important winter roost for bats.
Panorama Park Sauerland is an 80-hectare wildlife and adventure park in Kirchhundem. Another striking destination is the historic Rhein-Weser Tower on Westerberg in the Rothaargebirge. The 24-metre-high observation tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The tower has a restaurant with a terrace serving regional dishes, coffee and cake; overnight accommodation is also available. Before your trip, check whether these services are available on your dates.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
A 14.4 km section of the Rothaarsteig starts at the Rhein-Weser Tower and runs through the Schwarzbachtal nature reserve and the Heinsberger Hochheide heathland to Ginsberger Heide. Along the way, it passes Dreiherrnstein and the source of the Ferndorf. In Kirchhundem, audio tours on various circular hiking routes, 5 to 10 km long, bring the cultural history along the former border between the Sauerland, Siegerland and Wittgensteiner Land to life through anecdotes and stories. The circular routes differ in format from the 14.4 km section; they also have different focuses: narrated cultural history here, named landscape landmarks along the trail there.
The Rothaarsteig-Spur Oberhundemer Bergtour is designated as a circular trail. This signposted premium hiking trail begins and ends at the Haus des Gastes hiking portal in Oberhundem’s spa park. It leads through forests, past rugged rocks and to panoramic viewpoints on Kahleberg.
Cross-Country Skiing and the Wider Olpe Area
The Rhein-Weser Tower has a cross-country skiing centre with a ski school and ski hire; the extensive, well-maintained Rothaarloipe trail network also starts there. Operations and equipment availability may vary by season. If cross-country skiing is important to your trip, check what’s available in advance.
For the wider travel destination of Olpe, the entire district is part of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park, Germany’s second-largest nature park. The district also has a well-signposted hiking network, with routes ranging from easy strolls to challenging hikes.
