Dörentrup offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: hiking trails lead through the countryside and nature reserves, nature observation and bees are the focus in Schwelentrup, and a museum in Hillentrup tells the story of village life in times gone by. Wendlinghausen Castle also combines a historic building with a park that is open to visitors. Which of these themes you choose to explore can shape your trip planning in Dörentrup.

Hiking between nature and history

The Archaeological Journey Through Time combines hiking with historical themes: the trail is 18 kilometres long and takes in twelve archaeological and historical monuments. It is divided into a 12-kilometre eastern loop and a 6-kilometre western loop. The listed target groups include history enthusiasts, hikers, families and school classes. The two loops differ considerably in their stated lengths, allowing you to plan for different amounts of time.

Other trails have their own distinct focuses. The Lipperland Trail runs along the former Walkenmühle mill through the Begaauen nature reserve towards Dörentrup-Wendlinghausen. The eighth stage of the Weg der Blicke trail leads along forest paths, through fields and countryside, past Blomenstein and Wendlinghausen Castle, and through a nature reserve to Dörentrup. Here, the landscape and route take centre stage.

Experience nature in Schwelentrup

In Schwelentrup, several attractions add specific nature-related themes to the hiking experience. The wildlife observation station invites you to watch roe deer and other wildlife from a hide. Along the Bee Experience Trail, visitors can learn more about the ecological importance of bees. At the bee house, you can see a mini bee colony in an observation hive and learn about the daily life of two bee colonies.

If you would like to learn more about trees, you can identify 44 numbered tree species along the Tree Experience Trail between Schwelentrup and Sternberg Castle. Seven information boards along the NABU Nature Trail provide information about the landscape, nature, flora and fauna. The trail offers views of Schwelentrup and passes the sika deer enclosure. These attractions offer different ways to explore: identify tree species, learn about nature from the information boards or watch wildlife.

Guided tours of the Tree Experience Trail with a forester can be booked; beekeepers can lead guided tours of the Bee Experience Trail. Check in advance to find out what is currently available. The Dörentrup Innovation Centre, also known as the NatourEnergieZentrum, highlights the tension between nature and sustainable energy production.

The castle and village history

With their architecture, Wendlinghausen Castle and estate are among the most splendid buildings of the Weser Renaissance, dating from the early 17th century. The castle park is open to visitors. The castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Check the access conditions before your visit.

In Hillentrup, the private local history museum in the old fire station presents village life in times gone by across two floors. The exhibits cover schooling, medical and pharmacy services, crafts, household life and housing. The fire station was built in 1922. As visitor arrangements may change, check in advance to find out what is currently available.

Compare routes by distance and difficulty

The listed distances and difficulty ratings can help you compare options when choosing a hiking stage. The fourth stage of the Hansaweg X9 long-distance trail runs 13.20 kilometres from Dörentrup to Extertal and is rated difficult. The ninth stage of the Weg der Blicke is a 12.75-kilometre regional hiking trail in Dörentrup, rated moderate. The 10.16-kilometre A1 Humfelder Hermannsblick themed trail is also listed as moderate. The distances and ratings distinguish these options; trail conditions may vary.

For further guidance around the municipality, the Digital Trail provides information at various locations via QR-code signs. Topics range from playgrounds and local clubs to sights, history and the municipality’s culture. Before or during your stay, you can use it to look for information about the areas that interest you.
