Augustdorf is a municipality in the district of Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies at the transition between the Teutoburg Forest and the open Senne. Heathland, sand dunes, stream valleys and forests shape the landscape. The trails through this area and the Kötterhaus offer concrete points of reference when planning a stay: the routes vary in length and scenery, while the historic building offers insights into rural building traditions.

Trails through the Senne

The Augustdorf Circular Trail is about 20 kilometres long and marked with an O. It is fully signposted. The Senne landscapes it passes through include heathland, marshland and forests on sandy soil. Those comparing routes by length will find a shorter circular tour in the Augustdorf Dune Trail: it is approximately six kilometres long and passes through Senne dunes, heathland, pine forest and open areas. Rare plants and animals can be observed there.

The Furlbach Trail adds a seven-kilometre route along the Furlbach to this selection. Along the way, there are views of the water and old beeches on the banks. The trail’s natural highlights also include small marshes, heathland, sandy fields and a paddock with Senner horses. The varying lengths of the three trails help you choose a route, but do not in themselves indicate how long it will take to walk.

There are also marked routes for riders: they pass through the Augustdorf dune field and the Furlbach valley, and follow the Sennerandweg, also known as the Lönspfad. These routes are part of a regional and supraregional network of bridleways. Access may be affected by nature conservation regulations or temporary closures, so check local conditions before setting out.

Getting to the trails

You can reach the Augustdorf Circular Trail by taking bus route 390 from Detmold towards Pollmannskrug Augustdorf. As routes and timetables can change, it is advisable to check the current connection before departure. The Augustdorf access points for the Furlbach Trail are at the Augustdorf sports ground and in Augustdorf West. Information boards are located at both starting points of the Augustdorf Dune Trail.

The Dünensilhouette viewing platform can be reached directly via Kohlenweg 20. Parking is available at the Heidehaus or at the Nord-West-Ring/Industriestraße. As access arrangements may change, check local notices before your visit. This makes it possible to plan the Circular Trail, Dune Trail and viewing platform according to their different access points.

The Kötterhaus and local history

The Kötterhaus at Haustenbecker Straße 107 is also known as the Rühlmannstätte. It is one of the last Kötterhäuser in Augustdorf dating from the late 18th century and documents the rural building traditions of that time. The name refers to a farmer’s house; the Rühlmannstätte thus adds a testament to local history to the landscape trails.

Augustdorf’s settlement history also dates back to the late 18th century. A settlement was established at Dören at that time. In 1789, the place was named in honour of Count Simon August. The combination of settlement history and a rural architectural landmark offers a distinct way to learn about the place, different from the nature trails.

The wider Lippe destination has a hiking network covering around 2,000 kilometres. It includes a section of the European long-distance path E1, as well as the award-winning Hermannshöhen and Hansaweg hiking trails. This regional context places the local routes within a wider hiking network: in Augustdorf, you can consider the choice of trails in terms of the routes and landscapes described, while the Lippe network includes further hiking routes at regional level.
