Lügde combines a historic town center with an annual Easter custom, a park on the edge of the Old Town and designated circular trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Lügde, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: Would you like to explore the town’s history, include the Easter Wheel Run in your schedule, or plan a hike?

Townscape, Easter Custom and Architectural History

The Easter Wheel Run takes place in Lügde every year on the evening of Easter Sunday, the first day of Easter, and is organized by the Osterdechenverein Lügde e. V. The custom is recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage and is firmly rooted in the town’s traditions. If you are planning your trip around this date, check the event details for the relevant year.

The town wall, about 1,500 meters long, is fully preserved and encloses the entire historic town center. As part of the former town fortifications, it also served to protect against flooding. Watchtowers and half-timbered houses are also part of the town center’s character.

St. Kilian’s Church is a Romanesque church built around 1150, before the town was founded. It is considered a landmark of Lügde and is among Westphalia’s oldest architectural monuments. Following its seasonal opening schedule, it is open daily from Easter until the end of October; during the winter months, visits are possible by request only. Check access before your visit.

Dechenheim is located in the former fire station of the town of Lügde. In Falkenhagen, there is a well-preserved monastery complex. Its former dormitory, dating from 1509, is considered the oldest dated half-timbered house in Lippe.

Parkland and Trails

Emmerauenpark lies on the edge of the historic Old Town. Its facilities include an adventure playground, the “Ankerplatz” café with a beer garden, and “Emmer Beach,” with swimming and beach areas. All paths in the park are suitable for wheelchair access. If you would like to use any of the facilities, check the current seasonal details.

There are trails of different lengths for a walk through the town center or a loop around the monastery. The short town walk through the town center is an easy 2.62-kilometer circular route. The Klosterweg Falkenhagen Quality Trail is also easy, but longer at 4.90 kilometers; it begins and ends at Falkenhagen Monastery. The trails therefore differ both in length and starting point. Check the current route details before setting out.

The Osterbergweg Quality Trail begins and ends at the parking lot by St. Kilian’s Church on Höxterstraße in Lügde. From a landscape lounger and a shelter, you can enjoy views across the Lügde and Bad Pyrmont valley basin. For this trail, too, check the route details before setting off.

Hiking in the wider destination of Lippe

For broader hiking plans, Lippe offers its own regional setting: the Lippe hiking trail network covers around 2,000 kilometers. It includes part of European long-distance path E1, as well as the award-winning “Hermannshöhen” and “Hansaweg” hiking trails. These regional routes complement the circular trails described in Lügde, but this does not imply any connection between the individual routes.

When planning your trip, you can choose between the historic town center, destinations around Emmerauenpark and circular trails of different lengths. The Easter Wheel Run takes place on a fixed seasonal date, while trail planning depends on the details of each route.
