Vinsebeck – Moated Castle, Hiking Trails and Heubach
Accommodation in Vinsebeck
Vinsebeck combines a Baroque moated castle with hiking trails along the Heubach, the landscape around Frankenberg and cycling routes. If you are looking for hotels in Vinsebeck, you can use these themes to help plan your trip: culture in the town centre, hiking and cycling offer different ways to explore the area.
Moated Castle and Town Centre
Vinsebeck Moated Castle is a Baroque complex dating from 1720. It stands on a square island surrounded by a 17-metre-wide, water-filled moat. Much of the historic interior has been preserved in its original condition from the time of construction. You can arrange castle tours by telephone. This lets you combine an interest in the architecture with a guided tour scheduled in advance.
Another Baroque building is located in the town centre: St John’s Church. Its features include a magnificent high altar. The castle and the church offer different architectural themes for exploring Vinsebeck.
Hiking Trails Around Vinsebeck
Three hiking trails start and end at a small hiking car park close to the moated castle and the Heubach, which flows north-east of the town. Trails A1 and A2 lead west from the town centre up the slope of Frankenberg, almost as far as the foothills of Vinsebeck Forest. A3 passes east of the moated castle and follows the Heubach through a varied cultural landscape. The routes therefore head in quite different directions: A1 and A2 climb to the west, while A3 follows the stream.
The Steinheim–Vinsebeck circular hiking trail (A1) offers sweeping views of Vinsebeck and the Steinheim Basin from Frankenberg. Above the town, it passes through extensive meadows and pastures with old fruit trees and numerous copses. The trail is suitable for pushchairs. A disused quarry, designated as a natural monument and nature reserve, is also located along A1. The gliding airfield is another attraction along this route.
Heubach Floodplain and Geological Features
West of Vinsebeck, the source areas of the Graf Metternich springs lie in the Heubach floodplain. A geological formation there is known as the “Vinsebeck Dome”. At this location, powerful folding forces have pushed different layers of rock into an almost vertical position. The name therefore refers to a geological formation, not the moated castle. Alongside the castle and church, the distinctive rock structure is another feature of the landscape.
Cycling and Gliding
Vinsebeck lies on the R1 European Cycle Route and is a destination for cyclists from the surrounding area and further afield, particularly during the warmer months. A newly built village and rest area is located by the Heubach, near the moated castle. It offers cyclists a place to stop and relax. This gives a cycling trip a different focus from the hiking trails: the emphasis here is on the R1 route and a place to rest in town.
Motorcycle routes also pass through Vinsebeck, making this Steinheim district part of the “Kulturland Kreis Höxter” biker region. Nearby, the Egge Air Sports Club has operated gliding activities on Frankenberg since 1962. Gliding depends on the weather and the season. Guest flights may be offered during the summer months, depending on the season. If a guest flight is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether one is currently offered for your dates.
