Discover Sandebeck
Accommodation in Sandebeck
For a trip to Sandebeck, you can focus on hiking, architectural history, geology and local traditions. Trails, the church and volcanic landscape offer different themes to consider when planning; the Christmas market also gives your visit a seasonal focus.
Hiking Trails and Route Starting Points
Sandebeck station is on the Herford–Paderborn railway line and serves as a starting point for hikes into the Egge Hills on the E1 hiking trail, the European long-distance path. The A4 hiking trail starts in Sandebeck at an information board in a hiking car park west of the village, near the forester’s lodge.
Hiking in the Steinheim Destination
There are six A-series hiking trails in the Steinheim destination; four run in and to the southwest of Steinheim Forest. A1 and A2 follow forest tracks throughout, passing through the biodiverse mixed deciduous forest. Route A5 runs through the Emmer floodplains towards Eichholz and crosses the Emmer near Struckstein before heading back on the other side. A6 runs as far as Kluslinde, east of Eichholz, and then returns to Steinheim along the other bank of the Emmer. This gives you a choice of different route descriptions for forest and river landscapes within Steinheim.
Church and Cycling Route
Tour 3 – Graf Metternich Brunnen Tour passes very close to St. Dionysius Church in Sandebeck. Built in 1862 in the Neo-Gothic style, the church is also known as “Eggedom.” St. Dionysius is a three-aisled hall church with a 48-metre-high, copper-roofed bell tower on its west side. Furnishings preserved from the former church include an offering box from 1588, a holy water font from 1620 and a baptismal font from 1627.
Geology and Landscape
The Sandebeck volcano formed in the Miocene and is between 7 and 14 million years old. The disused basalt quarry on the volcano has been protected as a natural monument since 1974. Velmerstot is also distinguished by its two summits: the peak of Preußische Velmerstot, the southern summit, rises to about 464 m above sea level in the Steinheim-Sandebeck area of the district of Höxter. Lippische Velmerstot forms the northern summit and is 441.4 m high. Velmerstot as a whole is part of the Teutoburg Forest / Egge Hills Nature Park. The Egge Tower stands on Preußische Velmerstot; heathland and rugged sandstone cliffs define the landscape on Lippische Velmerstot.
Local History and Event Dates
A long walk leads to Gut Wintrup, an imposing natural-stone building with a half-timbered upper storey. Sandebeck’s Krautbund also has a local distinction: the local version contains 24 plant parts.
The Christmas market in Sandebeck is organised every two years by Dorfwerkstatt Sandebeck. The next market is planned for Advent 2026. The Vincenzhaus has stalls selling homemade goods from the village and beyond; food and drink are available in the forecourt and at the neighbouring village café. If you would like to plan your trip around the market, check the specific event dates in advance.
