Discover Hagen: Castles, Museums and Rivers
Accommodation in Hagen
Hengstey Lake lies in the north of Hagen, where the Lenne and Volme flow into the Ruhr. Hagen’s outdoor activities range from river pursuits to circular hikes and a whitewater facility, with each location offering something different.
Rivers, Lake and Activities
The Ruhr, Volme, Lenne and Ennepe rivers invite visitors to Hagen and the surrounding area to go fishing, pedal boating and canoeing. On Hengstey Lake, SeeBad Hengstey is located right on the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route. In addition to summer swimming, it is a year-round destination for walkers, cyclists, water tourists and other visitors.
For those who prefer to explore on foot, the 3 TĂĽrme Weg is a circular hiking trail almost twelve kilometres long. It passes the Bismarck Tower, Kaiser Friedrich Tower and Eugen Richter Tower. The Lenne Whitewater Park offers a different kind of sporting activity: it hosts international races and is suitable for recreational paddlers as well as elite athletes. Together, the circular trail and whitewater park offer different ways to enjoy Hagen actively.
Museums and Castles
Werdringen Moated Castle was first mentioned as early as the 13th century and is now used as a museum and event venue. The Hagen Archaeology Museum – Werdringen Moated Castle is a geological and archaeological museum. The castle café serves coffee, cake and waffles, as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Together with the Osthaus Museum Hagen and the Emil Schumacher Museum Hagen, the Hagen City Museum forms the Museum Quarter. The City Museum offers guided tours, workshops and activity days for visitors of all ages. The museum is family-friendly, and families can use a museum backpack to explore independently.
At Hohenlimburg Castle, you can visit the “Black Hand” exhibition and the castle courtyard with its accessible dungeon. Other areas mentioned include the outer bailey with its salute cannons, the castle garden and the battlements. Since 1999, Villa Hohenhof has been an anchor point on the Route of Industrial Heritage.
Discover History and Culture
The Hagen Bunker offers a distinctive way to experience the history of the bombing raids of the Second World War: in a faithfully reconstructed cellar, visitors can get a sense of what life was like during that period. The Hagen Adult Education Centre, the City Archives and the City Museum regularly offer joint guided tours of the bunker and other surviving air-raid shelters from the Second World War and the Cold War.
The world’s first walk-through planetary model offers an unusual perspective on Hagen. Large bronze plaques extend across several locations throughout the city. The city’s performing arts and concert scene also offers a range of formats: the Hagen Orchestra performs symphony and chamber concerts, family and crawling concerts, as well as special concerts.
At the LWL Open-Air Museum Hagen, groups can print historic patterns on fabric in the indigo dyeing workshop and the adjoining dyer’s garden. The piece of fabric provided is about 100 × 120 centimetres. This group activity complements the museum’s history themes with a hands-on way to explore historic patterns.
