Experience the Krickenbecker Seen and nature

The information center of the Biological Station is located right by the Krickenbecker Seen and is a starting point for trips through the varied lakeside landscape. From its 30-meter-long viewing walkway, you can enjoy a good view of Hinsbecker Bruch and its breeding birds or winter visitors. This brings together views across the marsh and opportunities to observe birdlife in one place.

The Biological Station has marked various circular trails through the different natural environments of the nature experience area. A map of the circular trails is available free of charge at the information center. Those interested in biodiversity and local birdlife will also find the “Habitat Towers” in the Krickenbecker Seen nature reserve. They have received a UN Decade award and make nature an interactive experience: touchscreens, tactile models, listening stations and videos offer different ways to explore the topics.

Cycling routes and circular trails in the Viersen district

The Viersen District Rail Trail is 122.8 kilometers long. It runs along or parallel to disused railway lines and passes through open fields and quiet forests on its way to the lakes of the Krickenbecker Seen. The route thus combines the character of former railway lines with landscapes of fields, forests and lakes. Its length gives a clear idea of the scale of this cycling route, while its course takes in a variety of landscapes.

The Viersen Circular Trail offers a different experience. A good starting point is the Niers boat landing in Viersen-SĂĽchteln. The route initially follows the Niers for several kilometers through the Saalbruch nature reserve. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Detours from the circular trail lead to the Clörather Mühle viewpoint and the historic center of Dülken at cycling junction 40. There you will find the Geschichtsmeile historical trail and the Narrenmühle, an old post mill with a fools’ museum. The circular trail also passes St. Maria Hilfe der Christen parish church in Dornbusch. The route description thus combines stretches of nature along the Niers with individual viewpoints and cultural-history stops.

Cultural history in Grefrath

The Lower Rhine Open-Air Museum of the Viersen district is located in Grefrath and showcases the Lower Rhine’s farming and craft culture across around 4.5 hectares. The museum includes the listed Dorenburg manor house, surrounded by a moat. It houses a permanent exhibition on aristocratic domestic life as well as changing special exhibitions on cultural history.

The museum also includes historic farmsteads and workshops. They illustrate the farming and craft history of the Lower Rhine, offering a different focus from the exhibition in the Dorenburg. Together, aristocratic domestic culture and rural working and craft history represent different sides of the region’s past.

The museum offers a wide range of educational programs for visitors of all ages. As specific dates and availability may change, check in advance which activities suit your visit. For refreshments, the museum restaurant “Pannekookehuus” serves Lower Rhine specialties. The museum’s old-fashioned general store sells regional products.
