Rhein-Sieg District: Discover culture, history and nature
Accommodation in Rhein-Sieg District
Four regions are particularly relevant to tourism in the Rhein-Sieg District: the Siebengebirge, the Siegtal, the Bergisches Land and the Rhein-Voreifel region. Destinations and routes range from historic sites and museums to nature experiences and trails for walking or cycling. This lets you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
Stadt Blankenberg: Castle and the history of winegrowing
Stadt Blankenberg grew out of a castle built by Counts Heinrich II and Eberhart II of Sayn on a rocky spur above the Sieg River. An observation platform with a telescope on the castle’s Georg Tower offers views across the Siegtal and surrounding area. In the Neustadt, the local history museum is housed in the Katharinenturm, a gate tower dating from the 13th century.
The history of winegrowing is another topic in its own right here: The winegrowing museum in the so-called “Runenhaus” offers insight into the centuries-long history of winegrowing in Stadt Blankenberg. The wine trail through the former vineyards starts there. The museum and trail combine historical insights with a route through the landscape.
Museums, places of remembrance and natural landscapes
In Bad Honnef-Rhöndorf, the Adenauer House brings together the former home of the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, a garden and an exhibition. The museum is also a place of remembrance for the history of German and European democracy. The exhibition brings Adenauer’s long life to life through objects and media. From Bonn Central Station, take U-Bahn line 66 to the Rhöndorf stop, then walk for ten minutes to the Adenauer House; the way to the museum is signposted. Check current transport information before travelling.
The picture book museum has been housed in the manor house at Burg Wissem since the early 1980s. The cultural centre includes, among other things, the tourist information office, the Museum of Troisdorf’s Urban and Industrial History (MUSIT), the Wahner Heide visitor centre, a creative workshop, the KennenLernenUmwelt project and a castle restaurant. The castle park leads directly into the Wahner Heide. The park features an experiential sensory field, wildlife enclosures with red deer and several sika deer, as well as other leisure activities. The Wahner Heide is a local recreational area and a popular day-trip destination. Because of the rules in the nature reserve, visitors should stay on the marked trails.
In the Siebengebirge, the Drachenfels is considered the most striking rock formation and one of the most visited day-trip destinations in the Rhineland. The Drachenfels Railway is said to be Germany’s oldest cog railway still in operation and takes visitors to the middle station right by Schloss Drachenburg. Rheinbach offers a different perspective on history: the Roman Aqueduct Information Centre is located at Himmeroder Hof in the town centre, roughly halfway along the Roman Aqueduct hiking trail.
The Rodderberg is home to a geological curiosity: just 500 metres from the basalt cone of Rolandbogen, a formation unique in Central Europe brings together volcanic rocks from different periods. Each place has its own focus, ranging from architectural and democratic history to geological landforms.
Routes for cycling and walking days
The Rhein-Sieg District’s quality hiking trails include the Natursteig Sieg, Bergischer Weg and Rheinsteig. In the Siebengebirge, a hiking trail links three Beethoven steles: at Heisterbach Abbey, on the Petersberg and on the Drachenfels plateau. The trail connects these three stops as a culture-focused walking route.
Cyclists can choose from tourist routes through diverse natural and cultural landscapes, suitable for leisurely riders, sporty cyclists and e-bike riders. The 124-kilometre Apfelroute passes through Alfter, Bornheim, Swisttal, Rheinbach, Meckenheim and Wachtberg; it can also be explored via six loop trails. The Rhine Cycle Route runs from Remagen via Königswinter to Unkel and Linz and has 15 audio stations. This offers a choice of routes with different layouts: a longer route with additional loops or a route with audio stops along the Rhine.
When choosing a hotel location, it helps to first decide which places and topics will shape your stay. Tailor your search to whether you mainly plan to visit historic sites and museums, enjoy nature, or take cycling and hiking trips. Check the available connections for your chosen destinations and fit your outings into your travel plans.
