Werther (Westf.) brings together routes, art, and local history. When searching for a hotel in Werther, the town’s different themes can help guide your travel planning: they range from longer routes and guided town tours to places of artistic interest. The differences below can help you choose visits according to your interests. Arrange guided tours in advance and check the museum’s current visitor arrangements beforehand.

Compare Hiking and Cycling Routes by Their Course

The Werther Circular Hiking Trail (RW) is around 31 kilometres long and connects the town centre with all districts of Werther (Westf.). Its route therefore leads from the centre into the different parts of the town. The R13 cycle route is around 20 kilometres long and runs through Werther territory, including Rotingdorf, Rotenhagen, Häger, and Arrode, as well as partly through Bielefeld territory. Based on their approximate lengths, R13 is the shorter of the two routes mentioned; its course also differs in that it partly crosses Bielefeld territory. When choosing between the two, you can therefore consider both distance and route: the circular hiking trail connects the town centre with Werther’s districts, while R13 also crosses the named area in Bielefeld.

The Arminius Spring in Werther offers a different kind of stop along the way: it is a resting place for those who enjoy the finer things. At the spring, a scent stele invites visitors to consciously experience the aromas of a typical forest. Here, the focus is on a single sensory experience, whereas the two routes are distinguished mainly by their length and course.

Guided Town Tours and Their Arrangements

You can book guided town tours with one of the ten trained guides. Group requests can be accommodated; arrange dates directly with the guides. If you are travelling with a group, you can make your requests as part of that arrangement.

There is also a guided town tour for deaf people, during which they can visit places of interest with background information on an iPad provided by the town, including as part of a group. The iPad is loaned out by prior reservation; clarify the arrangements with the town in advance. This means you can account for the general scheduling arrangements with the guides and the prior reservation for borrowing the iPad as separate planning steps.

Art and Local History Around Böckstiegel

The Peter August Böckstiegel House Museum opened on 7 April 2018 on the grounds surrounding the artist’s former home in Werther. Since 2008, the Peter August Böckstiegel Foundation has been responsible for conveying the life and work of Peter August Böckstiegel, preserving and promoting his work, and making the artist’s house in Werther accessible to the public. If you are planning a museum visit, check its current visitor arrangements in advance.

The Böckstiegel Trail is 4.85 kilometres long. Seventeen bright red steles mark places that repeatedly inspired Peter August Böckstiegel to create paintings and appear in his work. The stops thus draw attention to the connection between particular places and the subjects that recur in his work.

Another connection to art is the ever-growing Sculpture Trail, which runs from the town park to HAUS WERTHER. For the “Sculpture Trail Werther 2003” art event, works by artists from the region were installed from the town park along the Mühlenwiese to the HAUS WERTHER civic meeting place. The current description of the trail and the art event at the time offer different ways to understand it: you can distinguish the route from the town park to HAUS WERTHER from the historical context of the installations.

Steles commemorating former photographers are also part of the town’s history: they mark the photographers’ former locations and offer a glimpse into the past from their point of view. Werther is also known for its caramel sweets. Together with the Böckstiegel Trail, the Sculpture Trail, and the guided tours, these offer a variety of cultural points of interest to consider when planning your stay.
