Verl offers several specific themes for a stay: historical sites, insights into button-making, and cycling routes with different focuses. When looking for a hotel in Verl, it may be helpful to decide first whether you mainly want to include local history, a particular cycling route, or several cultural sites in your stay.

Local history and sacred architecture

The historical and geographical city tour covers 24 locations, with information boards explaining their historical significance. It explores Verl’s past through several sites. St. Anna Church provides a specific architectural reference: it was built in the neoclassical style from 1792 and consecrated in 1801. The construction period and consecration are two separate milestones in its history. A Baroque wayside chapel is also documented historically: the oldest known written mention of such a chapel dates to 1661.

Button-making at Haus Verl No. 8

At Haus Verl No. 8, visitors can observe all stages of button production and see two historic workshops in operation. The Button Museum contains material on the world of buttons. The house also includes a historic button workshop with an exhibition, as well as the former interior of the Maasjost printing works. The production process, museum, and various historic rooms each offer a different focus at this one site.

Cycling routes with different focuses

Four circular cycling routes called “Experience Verl” showcase the history and development of Verl and its districts. One route with a specified length is the 30.5-kilometer St. Anna Route, which starts and ends at St. Anna Church in the historic town center. Some sections pass through fields, meadows, and woodland in areas of the former parish of Verl. The route also passes historic farmsteads, monuments, wayside crosses, roadside shrines, and chapels.

The city tour presents history across 24 locations with explanatory information; the St. Anna Route connects a named starting and finishing point with a fixed length and stretches through different landscapes. This lets you weigh up visiting several historic sites against riding a circular route with a specified distance. The Europaradweg R1 is also among the routes that explore the area around Verl.

Art, nature, and places of remembrance

Bürmsche Wiese Sculpture Park is a nature-rich oasis in the heart of Verl, where the artworks invite you to linger. Lake Verl in Sürenheide is highlighted as a place to experience nature. Along the Verler Kirchwege route, sandstone steles invite meditation and prayer. On the Rogation Days, Seppeler Chapel remains a stop and contains a devotional image. Sacred sites offer different focuses: St. Anna represents neoclassical architecture, Seppeler Chapel is associated with the Rogation Days, and the Verler Kirchwege route with meditation and prayer.

In Kaunitz, a memorial plaque commemorates the liberation of 800 Jewish forced laborers by American troops in 1945. Verler Leben adds a celebration featuring music and a fair to the cultural offerings.
