Olef: Half-timbered houses, village square and paths in the Olef Valley
Accommodation in Olef
Olef is a district of Schleiden and combines a protected historic centre with paths through the Olef Valley. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Olef, you can choose how to explore the destination based on the focus of your trip: local history and the village layout sit alongside hiking and cycling. This can help you decide whether to explore Olef primarily through its historic centre or the routes described here.
Townscape, village square and church
Olef’s cohesive townscape has been specially protected as a heritage area since 1987. The historic centre of Schleiden-Olef has changed little since the 19th century. At its heart is the triangular square; the half-timbered houses around it were built after a fire in 1697. The two dates mark distinct chapters: 1697 refers to the construction of the houses after the fire, while 1987 marks the start of special protection for the townscape.
The Catholic parish church of St John the Baptist in Olef has origins dating back to the 13th century. Its distinctive features include a baptismal font made of Namur bluestone and a rare two-storey altar. Alongside its half-timbered architecture, the historic centre is notable for its medieval origins and distinctive furnishings.
Hiking and cycling around Olef
Winding forest paths lead through the Olef Valley and up to Kuckucksley. One specifically named route is the Oleftal-Tour (13) winter hike: it loops around Olef, is 8.0 kilometres long, is rated easy and has a stated walking time of 2:30 hours. The views of the winter landscape of the Eifel are among its highlights. The two routes have different focuses: the forest paths lead to Kuckucksley, while the winter hike loops around the village and specifies its distance, duration and difficulty. Check seasonal conditions before setting out.
The Eifelsteig and Felsenweg hiking trails, the Tälerroute and EifelRadSchleifen cycle routes, and the Olef–Gemünd and Olef–Schleiden sections of the Oleftalbahn are signposted at Olef station. The historic centre is also home to Germany’s only railway crossing over a village square. It is a distinctive feature of the townscape.
Schleiden: National park and nature watching
The wider destination of Schleiden also offers nature and cultural attractions. The Eifel National Park Centre in Schleiden houses the accessible, interactive “Wildnis(t)räume” nature exhibition for people of all ages. The centre is open year-round and serves as a starting point for regular ranger tours through Eifel National Park. Check the tour dates before your trip.
At the Vogelsang IP International Place in the Eifel National Park Star Park, the observatory run by the “Sterne ohne Grenzen” astronomy workshop regularly offers public skywatching events. The Vogelsang IP “Sternenpark” Star Viewpoint is equipped for independent astronomical exploration of the night sky and is easy to reach. These are two different ways to experience the subject: a public observation programme and exploring the night sky independently.
The Bird Watching Station at Urftsee is also part of the wider destination of Schleiden. There, visitors can watch cormorants, great crested grebes, ducks and grey herons. Two high-quality telescopes with 15Ă— magnification are installed at different heights, allowing wheelchair users to watch birds comfortably too. Alongside looking at the night sky, this offers a specific opportunity for birdwatching.
