Discover Ahrhütte: Nature and Railway Heritage
Accommodation in Ahrhütte
Ahrhütte combines nature watching with traces of the Ahr Valley Railway. At the Eifalia Butterfly Garden, the focus is on animals and a seasonal outdoor garden; the Adenau Discovery Tour takes you through the landscape and railway history. If you are planning a hotel stay in Ahrhütte, these different themes provide a concrete basis for deciding which impressions you want to shape your trip.
Butterflies and animals at Eifalia
The Eifalia Butterfly Garden is located in Ahrhütte. In two halls, you can observe exotic butterflies, lizards, turtles and birds up close. The rainforest house in particular is home to free-flying blue morpho butterflies and banana butterflies. The halls offer a view of various animal groups, while the free-flying butterflies in the rainforest house provide a distinctive highlight.
The garden includes a children’s area with opportunities to play and explore, plenty of seating and a cafeteria; Eifalia is also accessible. From May 1, a botanical outdoor garden invites you to discover native butterflies. The halls and outdoor garden therefore offer different focuses: exotic animals indoors, and native butterflies outdoors from the start of the stated season. Please check the current visiting hours when planning your visit.
The Discovery Tour and railway history
The railway line from Blankenheim-Wald to Ahrdorf, built in 1913, ran in the area around Ahrhütte. It included Dollendorf station near Ahrhütte, railway embankments and bridges. The former route can also be traced along the Adenau Discovery Tour: along the way are information boards about the history of the Ahr Valley Railway, old stone retaining walls with resting niches, former station buildings and an old double signal.
The Discovery Tour is a return route along the Ahr through the landscape of the Upper Ahr Valley between Fuchshofen, Müsch and Ahrhütte. It follows the Ahr Cycle Route along the former railway line. This means that the tour brings you both the Ahr and visible evidence of the former railway connection. If you are particularly interested in the history of the line, the information boards and the structural remains mentioned provide specific points of reference.
A look at the chapel
The chapel in Ahrhütte is also part of the local history: it dates from 1929/1930. This relatively recent date distinguishes it from the historical railway traces associated with the line built in 1913. Both themes offer their own perspective on Ahrhütte’s history, without requiring a single focus.
Blankenheim: more destinations and routes
In Blankenheim, the Grafenburg Castle is a historical highlight in its own right. It was originally built around 1115 as a hilltop castle and was transformed over time from a medieval fortification into a Baroque palace. Other sights in Blankenheim include the Eifel Museum as well as the Hirten Gate and Georg Gate.
Several routes are also connected with Blankenheim: the Ahr Cycle Route and the AhrSteig begin at the source of the Ahr in Blankenheim; the seventh stage of the Eifelsteig passes by the source. Between Blankenheim and Ahrbrück, the Ahr Cycle Route is rideable throughout, with minor restrictions. Check current route conditions before setting out. The RadBus 899 “Upper Ahr Valley” runs between Blankenheim and Ahrbrück; for your travel planning, it is advisable to check the current timetable.
A seasonal event in Blankenheim is the Ghost Parade, held annually on Carnival Saturday. It starts at 7:11 p.m. at the pharmacy on Ahrstraße. Anyone joining as a “ghost” needs a white bedsheet and a pitch torch. Check the specific dates and arrangements for the relevant year before travelling.
